No. 23 Bruins Sweep USC to End Regular Season

LOS ANGELES -ย Junior Mac May led the 23rd-ranked Bruins with 17 kills, 14 digs and three aces, as UCLA ended the regular season with a sweep of USC on Friday at the Galen Center. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 28-26.

Senior Savvy Simo had 12 digs and eight kills, while sophomore Kelli Barry added 11 digs. Senior Cali Thompson recorded 20 assists and six digs and sophomore Devon Chang had 15 assists and six digs, as the Bruins (18-11, 13-7 Pac-12) hit .250 as a team. Junior Jenny Mosser had nine kills and three blocks, redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan notched six kills and six blocks and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych added six kills. UCLA had 10 blocks as a team.

The Bruins only trailed by one on a couple of occasions in the first set. Down 6-5, five of six on two May kills, a Ryan solo block and two USC attack errors put UCLA up 10-7. The Trojans rallied to re-take the advantage at 13-12, but the Bruins scored the next four and seven of eight to take the lead for good. The first four points came on kills by Ryan, Mosser, Simo and May. Following a USC sideout, a Mosser kill and back-to-back Simo blocks made it 19-14. The Trojans would end up tying things at 21, but the Bruins scored four of the final five on kills from May and Ryan, a USC attack error and a Mosser/Ryan block to win the first by a score of 25-22. May, who recorded her 100th career ace in the opener to become the 13th Bruin with 1,000 kills and 100 aces, led the team with five kills and five digs. Ryan added three kills and three blocks and Barry posted three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Trojans, .158 to .027.

Up 9-5, kills by Hadrych and May, a Ryan/May block and a USC attack error increased the margin to 13-5, and after a sideout, a kill and solo stuff from Ryan made it 15-6. A service error on the Bruins' third set point closed out a 25-17 win. May notched five kills and four digs, Mosser added four kills, Simo tallied six digs and three kills, Barry had four digs and Hadrych recorded three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Trojans, .457 to .213.
