May Surpasses 1,000-Kill Mark in Setback to Utah

LOS ANGELES - Junior Mac May became the 29th Bruin to reach the 1,000-kill plateau, recording 17 kills to go with eight digs and three aces on Saturday, but the 23rd-ranked Bruins dropped a four-set decision to No. 16 Utah at the John Wooden Center. UCLA won the opening set, 25-22, before Utah claimed the next three by similar 25-22 scores.
Senior Savvy Simo produced 15 kills and seven digs, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych had 11 kills and three blocks and sophomore Kelli Barry registered 13 digs and five assists. The Bruins (13-10, 8-6 Pac-12) hit .265 as a team behind the setting of senior Cali Thompson (26 assists and eight digs) and sophomore Devon Chang (19 assists and eight digs). Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan had seven kills, redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith added seven blocks, three kills and three digs and junior Jenny Mosser posted five kills and three blocks.
The largest deficit for the Bruins in the opening set was just one at 1-0, 14-13 and 15-14. The first featured nine ties and three lead changes. UCLA's biggest advantage was five points. At 8-6, a May kill, a Thompson ace and a Utah (18-7, 10-4 Pac-12) attack error gave the Bruins an 11-6 edge. Tied at 20, UCLA scored five of the last seven on a Simo kill, a Utah attack error, a Mosser kill, a combo block from Hadrych and Smith and another Simo kill to win 25-22.ย Simo paced the Bruins with five kills, adding three digs, in the opening set, while May posted four kills and three digs. Barry and Thompson both notched four digs and Mosser had three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Utes, .302 to .278.
Set two featured nine ties and a pair of lead changes. Trailing 6-3, the Bruins scored six in a row on two Hadrych kills, one from May, a Smith/Hadrych block and two Ute attack errors. The Bruins' biggest lead was four as late as 16-12, but Utah responded with six of the next seven and didn't trail for the rest of the set.ย Hadrych led UCLA with six kills in the second, May added three and Chang tallied six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Utes, .310 to .269.

UCLA took its first lead of the set at 13-12 and led as late as 22-21 before surrendering the final four points. May was 7-for-18 with no errors in the fourth, while Simo added three kills. Barry posted five digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .325 to .182.
The Bruins return to the court on Friday at California at 2 p.m.
