No. 10 UCLA Runs Past Pacific, 68-57

December 15, 2019 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES -- No. 10 UCLA held off Pacific, 68-57, in the team's final non-conference home game of the season on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Michaela Onyenwere and Japreece Dean led all players with 19 points each, and freshman Charisma Osborne tied her career-high with 17 points and recorded a new career-high with seven rebounds as the Bruins improved to 9-0 on the year.

UCLA ran out to a 7-0 lead and held Pacific scoreless for the first three minutes of the game before the Tigers did the same to the Bruins, holding UCLA scoreless for nearly five minutes and rallying to score seven unanswered points to tie. A pair of free throws by Osborne broke the scoring drought, and her three-pointer gave UCLA a 12-9 lead.

Osborne kept it up in the second quarter, turning a 16-14 lead into a 19-14 advantage with a three-pointer. On the next possession, Lauryn Miller made a steal that led to a Dean layup, increasing the Bruin lead to seven, 21-14. A four-point play from Sofie Tryggedsson cut into the UCLA advantage, but the Bruins went on a 6-0 run, forcing the Tigers to call time out with UCLA up 27-18. However, Pacific ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a two-point game at the half, 31-29.

The Tigers tied the game at 31-all on their first possession of the third quarter on a Brooklyn McDavid layup, but Onyenwere rattled off five-straight points to put the Bruins ahead, 36-31. Pacific kept close, closing to within one, 42-41, after a Valerie Higgins three-point play at 5:36. But five-straight points by Dean on a three-pointer and a fastbreak layup shot UCLA's lead back up to six, 47-41. UCLA extended its lead to nine to end the third, 54-45.

UCLA scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take its biggest lead of the game, 60-45, but the Tigers came back with a 10-3 run that cut the Bruins' lead to 63-57 with two minutes left. Osborne scored four-straight points in the final minute and a half to increase the lead to 10.

The Bruins outshot the Tigers from the field, 36-32%, and were 20-for-23 from the foul line, while Pacific was 14-for-16.

Tryggedsson and Higgins led Pacific with 15 points apiece. The Bruins, in particular Miller, held Pacific's leading scorer Brooklyn McDavid (19.6 ppg) to just seven points.

UCLA will next travel to Georgia for a Thursday morning game at 11:00 a.m. ET. The game will be televised live on the SEC Network.
