Powell Named to Stopper of the Year Watch List

LOS ANGELES โ UCLA sophomore right-handed pitcher Holden Powell has been named to the 75-man Stopper of the Year Watch List, it was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Monday afternoon.
The Stopper of the Year Award annually honors the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. ย A midseason watch list will be announced on Apr. 24, ahead of the winner announcement on Jun. 15.
Current UCLA undergrad assistant coach David Berg, who played at UCLA from 2012-15, is the only multi-time winner of the Stopper of the Year Award. The NCBWA has been handing out the award since 2005.
Powell is coming off a debut season in Westwood that earned him Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. Over 29 appearances, all in relief, he posted a 2-1 record with a 3.51 ERA, six saves, and 22 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings.
The Visalia, Calif. native was even better in league play as a freshman, logging a 2.08 ERA and notching a pair of saves.
Powell and the rest of the No. 3-ranked Bruins open up the 2019 season on Friday by hosting St. John's at 6:00 p.m. in the first of a three-game weekend series.
