No. 3 UCLA Beats No. 7 UC Irvine in Overtime, 13-10

LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 3 UCLA (14-1) remained undefeated at home with a 13-10 overtimeย victory over No. 7 UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spiekerย Aquatics Center.

In the win over UC Irvine, the Bruins were led by freshman Ava Johnson, who scored her second hat trick of the seasonย as nine different Bruins got in the scoring column.ย Redshirt senior Grace Reegoย and junior Maddie Musselmanย each scored two goals for UCLA. Senior Carlee Kapanaย started in goal for UCLA, playing the first three periods and the overtime periods and registeredย 11 saves and surrenderedย seven goals.ย Sophomore Jahmea Bent came on in relief in the fourth period, recording two stops and allowedย three scores.

The Bruins got on the board first with a power play goal from freshman Bella Baia off a nice feed from junior Bronte Halliganย (3:44). Sarah Nichols scored from the front court to tie it at 1-1 (3:20) on the Anteaters' next possession. Senior Kelsey Blacker (3:03) put the Bruins back in frontย with a score from the front court off a feed from freshman Val Ayala. Sophomore Roxy Wheaton scored on a shot nearside post off a pass fromย Musselman (2:08) to make it 3-1 Bruins. Thenย Reegoย ended the scoring in the period with a power play goal (0:53) off another assist from Halliganย as UCLA led 4-1 at the end of the first.

UCLA lost the second period, 2-1. The lone goal was scored by Johnson on a quick power play feed from Wheaton (1:46). But the Bruins gave up back-to-back goals on the next two possessions to take a 5-3 lead into the break.

The Anteaters scored their third-straight goal, opening the scoring in the third period with a goal at two meters from Prentice (7:05). Sophomore Lexi Liebowitzย then got in the scoring column with a cross-cage shot on a 6-on-5 opportunity (6:22) to push the lead to 6-4. Prentice then completed her hat trick with another goal at set (5:22). But Musselmanย became the seventh different Bruin to score on the next possession, a power play (4:58), to push the lead back to two goals at 7-5. Prentice scored her fourth on a penalty shot (3:15) to cut the lead to 7-6. But the Bruins answered again whenย Reegoย scored her second of the game off the post from distance (2:54) to make it 8-6. Ayala scored her first of the game on a power play from a Musselmanย pass (0:30) to give UCLA a 9-6 advantage. Brooks scored her second of the game for UCI on a power play (0:01) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 9-7.

UC Irvine opened the scoring in the fourth when Brooks completed her hat trick with a breakaway goal (6:09) to cut the deficit to 9-8. Brooks then tied the game at 9-9 with a power play goal (4:56). Then Musselmanย got a steal and scored on a breakaway off a perfect feed from Halliganย (3:30) to give UCLA a 10-9 edge. But Brooks scored her fifth of the game from the front court (3:02) to tie it at 10-10. Both teams made defensive stops down the stretch, including the final 10 seconds of regulation to send the game into extra frames.

In the first overtime period, UCLA took an 11-10 lead after Johnson scored a power play goal off a nice feed from Liebowitz (1:44). Kapana made two nice saves the rest of the period to keep the Anteaters at bay. Then Halliganย scored her first of the game in the second overtime period on a nearside shot that hit the post (1:58) to push the lead to 12-10. Johnson then capped off her hat trick with an insurance goal on a power play (0:22) to provide the 13-10 final.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 at UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbusย Invitational. UCLA will open with Long Beach State at 12:30 p.m. PT at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
