No. 5 Women's Tennis Blanks Saint Mary's

February 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis

MORAGA, Calif. โ€“ The No. 5 UCLA women's tennis team needed just over one hour to defeat Saint Mary's 4-0 Friday at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.

Gabby Andrews clinched the victory for the Bruins (6-1) in her first singles decision of the dual-match season. It was also a big day for Bruins Alaina Miller and Taylor Johnson, as each posted wins in singles and doubles matches.

The Bruins did not drop a single game in doubles play, making quick work of the Gaels. Playing together for the first time, the UCLA duo of Jada Hart and Taylor Johnson blanked Clementine Clement and Liesl Pieters to get things started. Not long after, the 38th-ranked pair of Abi Altick and Alaina Miller gave the Bruins the day's first point with a 6-0 victory over Chloe Goyette and Aubane Ville. The win came in the dual-match debut for Altick-Miller, thought the combination improved to 5-1 overall.

It was more of the same in singles play, where the Bruins claimed five of six first sets.

Miller had a tough go of it against Goyette in the first set, but eventually capped a 2-0 day for herself with a 7-5, 6-1 win on Court 4. The win improved the Saratoga, Calif. native's dual-match record to a team-best 6-0.

On the next court over, Johnson completed a two-win day of her own with a 6-3, 6-4 dismissal of the Gaels' Jordan Harris to move to 8-5 on the year.

With UCLA holding a 3-0 lead, Courts 2, 3 and 6 all neared completion.

In the end, a sweep of the back courts proved the outcome. Holding just one unfinished singles dual match to her name, Andrews surrendered a total of just five games against Ville en route to the win. The 6-2, 6-3 victory improved her overall record to 6-2.

The Bruins will be back at it Saturday when they visit No. 24 California. Play from the Hellman Tennis Complex gets started at 12 p.m.
