UCLA Edges South Carolina in 4-3 Thriller
February 08, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ In a non-traditional ITA National Team Indoor Championships match caused by heavy snow in the area, the No. 8 and seventh-seeded UCLA women's tennis team edged No. 15 South Carolina 4-3 by seizing a winner-take-all doubles match.
Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield provided the heroics on the top court. UCLA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in singles action, only to have South Carolina charge back and take the final point to doubles play.

Impending weather led event organizers to move all matches at Nordstrom Tennis Center scheduled for 3 p.m. or later to the Seattle Tennis Club. In an effort to accommodate the condensed slate, all matches began with singles play.
Jada Hart, Elysia Bolton and Ayan Broomfield got things started for the Bruins with the previous morning match winding down on the other three courts. The twist did little to slow the UCLA trio, as each took her opening set.
No. 117 Broomfield appeared on a mission in her Court 3 matchup, rolling past No. 79 Mia Horvit with little resistance 6-1, 6-1. The win marked Broomfield's third against a ranked opponent and improved her dual-match record to 2-0.
On Court 2, No. 18 Bolton looked in danger of dropping her first dual-match set of the season, trailing 5-3 against 38th-ranked Paige Cline. The freshman charged back with a fury against her senior counterpart, though, taking each of the next four games and momentum into the second set. There, Bolton doubled up Cline to secure her sixth ranked win in nine tries and improve her dual-match record to 5-0.
Courts 4, 5 and 6 started play with the top three still in progress and UCLA's Alaina Miller wasted little time making a statement. Leading 3-0 in the first set, the senior dropped her first and only game of the match, as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
In the lone three-set match of the day, Hart and 16th-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins took it about as far as they could. Hart's 6-3 first-set performance was equaled by Gamarra Martins in the second to force the deciding frame. After falling behind 3-1, the Bruin charged back to pull even at 4-4. Knotted again at 5-5, Gamarra Martins took the final two games to give the Gamecocks their first point of the day.
With the first domino fallen, South Carolina continued its rally with a 6-4, 6-2 win by Megan Davies over No. 77 Abi Altick on Court 4. The comeback was then completed on Court 5, where Silvia Chinellato held on against Taylor Johnson 7-6(5), 6-4.
Doubles play could not have been much closer, as each match was knotted at two games apiece at one point.
No. 15 Bolton and Hart eventually settled in, burying No. 23 Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher by a 6-2 score. The win improved the duo's overall dual-match record to 4-0 and put the Bruins one win away from advancing.
Fittingly, though, it would come down to the final match. Chinellato and Cline doubled up Johnson and Miller, turning all eyes to the top-15 matchup between Andrews-Broomfield and Gamarra Martins-Horvit on Court 1.
All tied up at four games each, Andrews-Broomfield held serve to put the Gamecocks on the brink of elimination. Then, at deuce leading 5-4, the return by Andrews was too much and the celebration began.
The Bruins will face No. 3 and second-seeded North Carolina Saturday in a time yet to be determined. The Tar Heels defeated No. 9 Oklahoma State 4-0 Friday.
