February 09, 2019 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES โ Parker Van Dyke sunk a deep 3-pointer as the clock expired to lead Utah past UCLA, 93-92, in a Pac-12 game on Saturday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
ย
Van Dyke finished with 15 points, connecting on 5-of-10 attempts from 3-point range. His game-winning shot helped Utah erase a 22-point UCLA cushion in the game's final 13 minutes.
ย
Utah (13-10, 7-4 Pac-12) trailed by 17 points at halftime. The Runnin' Utes nailed eight 3-pointers in the second half, finishing the game having made 14 of 36 attempts from 3-point distance. After having trailed at halftime, 49-32, Utah outscored UCLA in the second half by a 61-43 margin.
ย
UCLA (12-12, 5-6 Pac-12) saw Jaylen Hands total a career-high 27 points, as the sophomore guard made 8 of 12 shots and 4 of 6 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Kris Wilkes finished with 17 points, Jalen Hill scored a career-high 12 points and Cody Riley finished with 11 points.
ย
"That was obviously a tough loss, to say the least," UCLA interim head coach Murry Bartow said. "It was a tale of two halves. I'm not sure we can play much better in the first half. We were up 17, we're rolling along, we had 13 assists at the half, we played great. Obviously, we talk to the team a lot about trying to put two good halves together. Personally, I give Utah incredible credit."
ย
Hands added seven assists, five rebounds and three steals in one of his most efficient performances of the season. He eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the first time this year and for the third time in his two collegiate seasons.
ย
UCLA led Utah by a 19-point margin (74-55) with 9:21 to play and by as many as nine points (84-75) with just 2:08 to go in the game. The Runnin' Utes trimmed UCLA's advantage to three points with 41 seconds go to.
ย
David Singleton made one of two free throw attempts, putting the Bruins ahead, 85-81. After Utah's Sedrick Barefield missed a 3-point attempt, Hands was fouled by Utah and made two free throws, putting UCLA on top 87-81 with 35 seconds to play.
ย
Utah quickly answered with a layup from Riley Battin, forced a UCLA turnover, and Battin made a shot under the hoop while getting fouled. Battin missed the ensuing free throw attempt, before Utah got the ball back on a foul by UCLA's Prince Ali.
ย
Utah's Timmy Allen made a layup with 19 seconds left in regulation, cutting UCLA's advantage to 87-85. Cody Riley got free under the hoop for UCLA and dunked the ball, giving the Bruins an 89-85 lead at the 16-second mark.
ย
Utah followed with a deep 3-point basket from Both Gach, cutting UCLA's cushion to 89-88 with just eight seconds to play.
ย
Singleton made two free throws for UCLA, putting the Bruins up by three points (91-88) with eight seconds remaining. Hands fouled Barefield as he crossed the halfcourt stripe, and Barefield made both free throw attempts to trim UCLA's advantage to 91-90.
ย
Utah fouled the Bruins, sending Singleton back to the free throw line. Singleton made the second attempt, putting UCLA ahead 92-90, before Van Dyke hit the game-winning shot for Utah.
ย
UCLA shot 58.5 percent from the field overall, the team's second best field goal percentage of the season. All but one starter for the Bruins shot at least 50 percent.
ย
In the first half, UCLA shot 70 percent, making 21 of its 30 shot attempts.
The 61 points scored by Utah in the second half on Saturday marked the most points surrendered in any half by UCLA since Cal State Northridge recorded 64 points in the second half in Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 19, 1998. The Bruins won that contest, 114-97. ย
UCLA will return to action at California on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Game time at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Bruins' game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
