Garcia Named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week

March 25, 2019 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA junior right-hander Ryan Garcia has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Garcia is the second consecutive Bruin to be named the Pac-12's Pitcher of the Week after sophomore righty Zach Pettway broke a two-year drought for the program last Monday. UCLA is the first team to have a repeat Pitcher/Player of the Week in the Pac-12 this season.

Making his first weekend start of the 2019 campaign on Sunday, Garcia absolutely shut down Arizona as UCLA emerged victorious 3-1 to complete a series sweep.

He surrendered just one hit over 7 1/3 scoreless frames, matching a career-high in innings pitched. Garcia added eight strikeouts, equaling a season-best set last week against Oregon State.

After allowing a walk to the game's leadoff batter, the Sierra Madre, Calif.  native proceeded to retire 22 of the final 23 batters he faced, including 11 straight to end his outing.

Garcia went 1-2-3 in four of his full six innings, and ended up facing just one over the minimum by the time he was lifted with one out in the eighth inning.

The lone hit he allowed, a fourth-inning single, was wiped out by a double play from the very next batter.

UCLA improved to 17-4 overall and 5-1 in Pac-12 action after this weekend's sweep. The Bruins are ranked No. 1 in the nation for the second consecutive week.

UCLA is on the road this week, heading to Loyola Marymount for a  6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday night before going crosstown for a three-game series with rival USC starting on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. All three games of the USC series will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
