Onyenwere, Bruins Upset Maryland to Advance to Fourth Straight Sweet 16

March 25, 2019 | Women's Basketball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere scored a career-high 30 points to lead the No. 20 UCLA women's hoops team to an 85-80 upset over No. 9 Maryland in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday night.

With the win, the Bruins (22-12) advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fourth year in a row and won its 12th straight game in the opening two rounds of the Big Dance.

With the game tied at 76 at the four-minute mark, UCLA held Maryland to just one field goal (1-for-7) to close the contest, and the Bruins, who went 20-for-21 from the free throw line and pulled down 27 offensive rebounds, notched the upset.

Junior Japreece Dean scored 22 points and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, giving her 90 makes in her last 92 tries. She also had five assists and five rebounds.

Senior Kennedy Burke collected her third double-double of the year with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while redshirt senior Lajahna Drummer hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Storyline
Burke scored seven of UCLA's first 12, helping the Bruins to a five-point (12-7) lead after a beautiful one-handed feed from Dean. Burke ultimately finished the opening quarter with 11 points, as the Bruins closed the frame with a 6-1 run to go up 26-20.

Seven straight points by Onyenwere helped UCLA to a 33-28 advantage, as she connected on a 3-pointer in the left corner. A 3-pointer by Dean extended UCLA's lead to 38-30, and the Bruins took a 44-40 advantage into the locker room.

UCLA owned the glass in the first half, outrebounding the Terps 28-18, nearly having more offensive boards (17) than Maryland had total rebounds.

Maryland (29-5) stormed out of the locker room with a 7-0 run to take a three-point (47-44) lead. The Bruins fought back to tie the game at 53 apiece, getting a put-back by Drummer. With the game still tied at 57, Dean swooshed a 3-pointer on the run to put the advantage back in the hands of the Bruins.

A physical third frame saw Maryland end the quarter with a 10-4 run to take a five-point (71-66) edge in the fourth stanza.

The fourth quarter, like much of the contest, was s slugfest, finding the two physical teams deadlocked at 72 after a jumper by Onyenwere.

An and-one by redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro put UCLA up 79-76, and the Bruins held on to that lead for the remainder of the affair, ultimately getting a critical jumper from Burke with 1:03 left to go to keep the Terps at bay.
