No. 1 UCLA Posts Two More Sweeps

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA improved to 17-0 with its 11th and 12th sweeps of the year as the Bruins defeated Oregon (1-7) and No. 13 Loyola Marymount (13-7), 5-0, on Tuesday, March 26 at Ocean Park Beach. It was the first-ever meeting with the Ducks while the Bruins improved to 9-2 all-time against the Lions, posting their seventh-straight win over LMU.

In the win over the Ducks, freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno got the Bruins on the board, improving to 14-0 on the year with a straight-set win on court four over Lauren Page and August Raskie, 21-10, 21-10.

Senior Sarah Sponcil paired with junior Madi Yeomans on court two and posted a straight-set win over Oregon's Maddy Silberger-Franek and Emily Mattoon, 21-17, 21-10, to put the Bruins up 2-0.

Sophomore Mac May and junior Savvy Simo were reunited on court three and improved to 5-2 on the year with a 21-12, 21-14 win over the Ducks' Josie Cole and Ally Haden to seal the dual victory for the Bruins.

Freshman Lindsey Sparks and senior Izzy Carey put the Bruins up 4-0 with a straight-set win on court five over Oregon's Carly Wallace and Elise Ferreira, 21-15, 21-13. The win was Carey's 16th of the year (16-0, 9-0 with Sparks) and was the 103rd of her career, surpassing the UCLA all-time record of 102 set by Elise Zappia last year.

Then seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara completed the sweep on court one with a straight-set win over Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Nuneviller, 21-17, 21-17.

In the win over the Lions, sophomore Mac May and junior Savvy Simo put the Bruins up 1-0 with a straight-set win on court four over LMU's Ella Boehle and Emma Doud, 21-16, 21-11. The Bruin duo improved to 6-2 on the year.

Senior Sarah Sponcil and junior Madi Yeomans made it 2-0 with a straight-set win on court two over the Lions' Savannah Slattery and Reka Orsi Toth, 21-14, 21-19.

Seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara improved to 14-1 on the year with their 11th-consecutive straight-set win on court one that sealed the dual victory for the Bruins, defeating Megan Nash and Bo Culo, 21-18, 21-10.

Freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno put UCLA up 4-0, improving to 15-0 on the year with a straight-set win on court three over Sara Kovac and Jessie Prichard, 21-17, 21-19.

Freshman Lindsey Sparks and senior Izzy Carey completed the sweep with a three-set thriller over LMU's Erin Martin and Veronica Nederend, 21-18, 16-21, 15-12.

The Bruins return to action this weekend at the FIU Surf & Turf Invitational in Miami, Fla. The Bruins will open with No. 4 LSU at 5:30 a.m. PT on Friday, March 29. UCLA will also face No. 10 Stetson at 11:30 a.m. PT on Friday and will face No. 3 Florida State (7:30 a.m. PT) and No. 8 FIU (12:20 p.m. PT) on Saturday, March 30.
