Burke Selected by Dallas Wings in 2019 WNBA Draft
April 10, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK โ Kennedy Burke of the UCLA women's basketball team was selected by the Dallas Wings in the 2019 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm on Wednesday evening.
ย
Burke, who led the Bruins to their fourth straight Sweet 16 appearance, was drafted in the second round as the No. 22 overall pick.
ย
The Michael Price Family UCLA Women's Head Basketball Coach Cori Close, who was named the 2018-19 Media Pac-12 Coach of the Year, said Burke was built for a moment like this.
ย
"Kennedy has always had a pro body," said Close. "But the way she has grown her skill set and worked on her mental game will set her up for success at the next level. She is an elite defender, and she is one of the most versatile players in the draft. She was built for this! I am so proud of her."
ย
Burke etched her name all over the UCLA record books and will be remembered as one of the most dynamic players in program history. She played in 138 career games, ranking fifth all-time in school history. In four seasons, Burke registered 1,513 career points, 657 rebounds, 258 assists, 237 steals and 123 blocks. She ranks 18thย on UCLA's all-time scoring list, and is eighth all-time for 3-pointers made (106). Burke is one of only four players in program history to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks.
ย
As a senior, Burke was named Honorable Mentionย All-Pac-12ย for the third straight season and also earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Defensive team after she tallied 15.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and two steals per game. Prior to the start of the season, Burke was one of onlyย 20 players named to the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. During her freshman season, Burke was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Burke's senior year saw her score a career-high 29 points on Feb. 22ย at then-ranked No. 2 Oregon, helping the Bruins overcome a 22-point deficit and pull off the biggest upset in program history.
ย
Burke is the fourth WNBA draft pick produced by Close, joining Jordin Canada (Seattle Storm) and Monique Billings (Atlanta Dream), who went fifth and 15th overall, respectively, in last season's draft. In 2016, Close produced her first-ever WNBA draft pick as head coach, as Nirra Fields was selected 32nd overall by the Phoenix Mercury.
