Onyenwere Invited to Attend 2019 USA Women’s 3x3 Minicamp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rosters for the 2019 USA Basketball Women's 3x3 National Championship, which will be held May 3-4 in Las Vegas, are nearly complete and include three teams that qualified out of 3x3 tournaments over the past year, 13 teams representing some of the top NCAA Division I programs across the country and two teams that will be comprised of eight athletes invited to attend a two-day minicamp prior to the USA Women's 3x3 Nationals.
UCLA standout sophomore Michaela Onyenwere was selected to participate in the minicamp and will be fighting for a roster spot for the 2019 USA Women's Pan American Games 3x3 Basketball Team. She recently capped a breakout campaign in which she averaged a team-best 18.3 points per game to go along with 8.5 rebounds. The 2019 All-Pac-12 selection scored 642 points in 2018-19, the second-most (Denise Curry, 803) points scored by a sophomore in program history.
"I'm really honored to be invited to the 3x3 national championship trails," said Onyenwere. "It's really exciting to be able to compete with and against the best talent in the country. I know things like this will make me better as a player, and I'm so humbled to represent myself and UCLA in the best way I can."
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held for the first time outdoors at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, located in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. The USA 3x3 Nationals will tip-off with preliminary games from 3-10:30 p.m. (all times listed are local, PDT) on Friday, May 3. The preliminary round will continue from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on May 4, and, after teams are seeded based on preliminary records, the knockout round will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. The women's championship game, which will be streamed live online at usab.com/live, is set to tip at 10 p.m.
Rosters have been submitted to USA Basketball and teams have until May 2 to finalize their squads. In addition to the lure of a national championship, the event also will serve as the 2019 USA Basketball Women's 3x3 National Team trials, as all eligible athletes will be in consideration for selection to the 2019 USA Women's 2019 U.S. Pan American Games 3x3 Basketball Team.
Arriving in Las Vegas for a May 1-2 minicamp are eight athletes who submitted applications and were accepted by USA Basketball to compete in the tournament. In addition to Onyenwere, the remaining seven who will be divided into two teams for the USA 3x3 Nationals following the minicamp are: Bella Alarie (Princeton/Bethesda, Md.); Janelle Bailey (North Carolina/Charlotte, N.C.); Aleah Goodman (Oregon State/Oregon City, Ore.); Rebecca Hittner (Drake/Urbandale, Iowa); Rhyne Howard (Kentucky/Cleveland, Tenn.); Jordan Lewis (Alabama/Windermere, Fla.); and Destiny Slocum (Oregon State/Meridian, Idaho).
The three teams that won their respective 3x3 qualifying tournaments include LA Dream Team from the Nike 3ON3 tournament, Still Ballin' from the Washington 3x3 State Championships and WAC from the WAC National Qualifier.
LA Dream Team includes UCLA Bruin and 2012 graduate Rebekah Gardner (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.); Jianni Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.); Desiree Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.); and Brittany Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.).
Still Ballin' features Alyson Chandler (Bremerton, Wash.); LeAsia Jones (Oroville, Calif.); Irene Moore (Bremerton, Wash.); and Gabrielle Wade (Lacey, Wash.).
WAC is comprised of Jen Bresler (Redmond, Wash.); Ashley Graham (Redmond, Wash.); Alex Montgomery (Tacoma, Wash.); and Tricia Principe (Kalamazoo, Mich.).
As has been the case over the past two USA Women's 3x3 National Championships, USA Basketball invited select NCAA Division I programs to enter a team into the tournament. Included in this year's competition are representatives from Arizona State University, University of Connecticut, DePaul University, Iowa State University, University of Louisville, University of Maryland, University of Miami (Fla.), University of Michigan, Mississippi State University, North Carolina State University, defending USA 3x3 National Championship gold medalist University of Oregon, Stanford University and University of Texas.
The Arizona State roster includes Jamie Loera (Moses Lake, Wash.); Reili Richardson (Brea, Calif.); Robbi Ryan (Sheridan, Wyo.); and Jayde Vanhyfte (Annawan, Ill.).
Connecticut's team features Olivia Nelson-Ododa (Winder, Ga.); Megan Walker (Chesterfield, Va.); Christyn Williams (Little Rock, Ark.) and University of South Florida guard Sydni Harvey (Nashville, Tenn.).
DePaul's team is comprised of Kelly Campbell (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.); Alexa Held (Burlington, Ky.); Sonya Morris (St. Charles, Mo.); and Chante Stonewall (Normal, Ill.).
Iowa State's roster features Ashley Joens (Iowa City, Iowa); Alexa Middleton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.); Kristin Scott (Kasson, Minn.); and Madison Wise (Greenfield, Ind.).
Louisville's 3x3 team is comprised of Bionca Dunham (Philadelphia, Pa.); Jazmine Jones (Tallahassee, Fla.); Seygan Robins (Harrodsburg, Ky.); and Mykasa Robinson (Ashland, Ky.).
Maryland's team is comprised of Shakira Austin (Fredericksburg, Va.); Stephanie Jones (Havre de Grace, Md.); Taylor Mikesell (Massillon, Ohio); and Blair Watson (Nutley, N.J.).
Miami's squad lists Mykea Gray (Upper Marlboro, Md.); Destiny Harden (Chicago, Ill.); Kelsey Marshall (Davie, Fla.); and Beatrice Mompremier (Miami, Fla.).
Michigan's team is Amy Dilk (Carmel, Ind.); Akienreh Johnson (Toledo, Ohio); Kayla Robbins (Mitchellville, Md.); and Ariel Young (Tallahassee, Fla.).
Mississippi State is being represented by Jessika Carter (Waverly Hall, Texas); Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.); Bre'Amber Scott (Little Rock, Ark.); and Myah Taylor (Olive Branch, Miss.).
NC State's representatives are Kai Crutchfield (Raleigh, N.C.); Elissa Cunane (Summerfield, N.C.); Kaila Ealey (Raleigh, N.C.); and Kayla Jones (Jamesville, N.C.).
Oregon returns three members of the 2018 USA 3x3 World Cup Team in Otiona Gildon (Spokane, Wash.); Ruthy Hebard (Fairbanks, Alaska); and Sabrina Ionescu (Walnut Creek, Calif.). Lydia Giomi (Seattle, Wash.) rounds out this year's Ducks roster.
Stanford's squad features Lacie Hull (Spokane, Wash.); Lexie Hull (Spokane, Wash.); Estella Moschkau (Madison, Wis.); and Anna Wilson (Seattle, Wash.).
The Texas team includes Charli Collier (Baytown, Texas); Audrey Warren (Fort Worth, Texas); Joyner Holmes (Cedar Hill, Texas); and Sug Sutton (St. Louis, Mo.).
Olympic fans will see the launch of a new basketball discipline with the inclusion of 3x3 in 2020. The exciting and fast-paced game officially was unveiled in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and has since become a fan favorite at FIBA 3x3 World Cup events. Played on a half court with a 10-minute clock, and a 12-second shot clock, the first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation, is the winner. The non-stop action of 3x3 will ensure it is one of the hottest tickets in Tokyo, and fans in Las Vegas will get an early taste of that excitement during the USA Basketball 3x3 Nationals.
Held annually since 2012, this year marks the eighth edition of the USA Basketball 3x3 National Championships, and the first time the nationals will be held outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
