Mitchell Named Pac-12 Player of the Week
May 13, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ UCLA sophomore outfielder Garrett Mitchell was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Mitchell served as an offensive catalyst as UCLA went 4-0 last week, topping Long Beach State in a home midweek before picking up a road sweep at Pac-12 rival Washington State. Thanks in part to Mitchell's exploits, the Bruins improved to 41-8 overall and moved into a three-way tie for first place in the league at 19-5.
Hitting out of the leadoff spot, Mitchell went 11-19 (.579) for the week with four extra-base hits, six runs scored, four RBIs, and four stolen bases in as many attempts.
It was the first league weekly honor in Mitchell's career, and the 64th all-time for UCLA. A Bruin has been selected as the Pac-12 Pitcher of Player of the Week in six of the last nine weeks.
Mitchell was the team's primary firepower in a 2-1 win over the Dirtbags, as he had three extra-base hits and scored a run. He went on to post an 8-15 line in Pullman, collecting multiple hits in all three games and scoring five runs over the course of the series.
Among qualifying hitters, Mitchell leads the No. 1-ranked Bruins in batting average (.362), hits (72), and runs (46).
UCLA travels to UC Irvine on Tuesday night for the team's final midweek contest of the 2019 season. First pitch from Cicerone Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
