SAN FRANCISCO – Avery Anderson was named the 2019 Pac-12 Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year, and Alyssa Wilson earned Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Both individuals were instrumental in the Bruins' success not only at the Pac-12 Championships in Tucson, Ariz., but all season long.
In just his second year at the helm as UCLA's Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Anderson is enjoying immediate success, including a second-place finish for the Bruin men at this year's Pac-12 Championships. He led the UCLA men to 140 points, the Bruins' most points since winning the 2004 title and highest placement since also finishing second in 2005.
Anderson helped a trio of Bruins notch individual titles at this year's meet, the most for the program since 2008. Those individuals included Sondre Guttormsen (pole vault), Robert Brandt (10K) and Simon Litzell (javelin). He is UCLA's fourth mentor and 13th all-time recipient of the league's Coach of the Year award (Bob Larsen nine times, Jim Bush twice), and the first since Art Venegas guided the Bruins to their most recent conference title in 2004.
A native of Jackson, N.J., Wilson is UCLA's third recipient of the honor and first since 2006. She cemented her status as the Pac-12 Championships Women's Athlete of the Meet with a victory in the discus, as she opened with a winning throw of 56.93m (186-9) for her first title at the conference meet and the Bruins' first champion in the event since 2005. Along with her discus crown, Wilson was runner-up in the shot put (17.00m. 55-9.25) and hammer throw (67.78m; 222-4) to finish with a meet-high 26 points.
Wilson will head to the NCAA West Preliminaries ranked second nationally in both the shot put (18.02m) and hammer (70.63m), and 12th in the discus (56.97m). Her season-best marks in the hammer and shot put rank third and ninth, respectively, in conference history.
The NCAA West Preliminaries are set for May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
