Ralston Earns Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Honors
May 20, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ UCLA junior-right hander Jack Ralston has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
This represents the second time in the last three weeks that Ralston has picked up the league's weekly pitching honor, and the seventh time in the past 10 weeks that a Bruin has been named either the Pac-12 Player or Pitcher of the Week.
Ralston threw the first six innings of a combined one-hitter against Washington on Saturday night, helping the top-ranked Bruins to a 4-0ย win. The shutout was the team's NCAA-leading 11th of the season and was part of a weekend sweep that moved UCLA 1.5 games clear at the top of the Pac-12 standings.
The Newhall, Calif. native retired the first 11 batters he faced, and didn't allow a runner to get into scoring position until the seventh inning. He finished his outing with nine strikeouts, including five over his first two innings of work. The lone hit he allowed was a two-out single in the fourth, and he bounced back to get an inning-ending groundout on the first pitch to the very next batter he faced.
It was UCLA's first one-hitter since Jun. 2, 2013 and the fewest hits allowed by the team since May 15, 2015 when James Kaprielian and David Berg teamed up to toss the program's first-ever no-hitter.
The standout effort against the Huskies extended Ralston's team-best scoreless streak to 25 innings, as he last allowed a run on Apr. 27 to Utah. In that span, he's struck out 36 batters, an average of 12.9 per nine innings. The win over Washington was his 10th of the year, giving him the most wins in the Pac-12 and the third-most wins in the country. He's UCLA's first 10-game winner since Kaprielian in 2015.
For the season, Ralston has a 2.17 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 83 innings. He was named a Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist last week, making him one of just eight starting pitchers nationwide in the running for the award given to college baseball's top player.
Ralston and the Bruins conclude the 2019 regular season this weekend with a three-game Pac-12 series at Oregon beginning on Thursday, May 23, at 6:00 p.m.
