Fleming Selected to Second World Cup Team

May 25, 2019 | Women's Soccer

UCLA junior midfielder Jessie Fleming has been named to the Canadian Women's World Cup team, her second career selection.

Fleming, a three-year starter and 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, is a two-time All-American and three-time first-team All-Pac-12 honoree. She has totaled 22 goals, 18 assists and 62 points in her career at UCLA. In an abbreviated 2018 season during which she missed half the games while on World Cup Qualifying duty, she recorded five goals (three during NCAA Tournament play) and five assists and earned second-team All-Region and first-team All-Pac-12 acclaim. During her sophomore season in 2017, she earned first-team All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-12 honors and ranked third on the team with eight assists and fourth in scoring with 20 points. Fleming joined UCLA right after winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics and became the fourth UCLA freshman ever to earn NSCAA All-America honors, receiving third-team honors. She was also named the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman of the Year after leading UCLA with 11 goals and 27 points.

A mainstay with Team Canada since 2013 at age 15, Fleming was a starter at the 2016 Olympics and also helped Canada win gold at the 2016 Algarve Cup and silver at the 2015 Cyprus Cup. She played in the 2015 Women's World Cup and Pan American Games and won Canada's U-20 Female Player of the Year in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Fleming has made 65 appearances for the Canadian National Team, starting 53 games and scoring eight goals with four assists.

Fleming is the second current Bruin to be named to a World Cup roster, joining classmate Teagan Micah, who is playing for Australia. There are a total of six UCLA alumnae who have been selected to 2019 Women's World Cup rosters so far - Fleming, Micah, Abby Dahlkemper (U.S.), Sam Mewis (U.S.), Mal Pugh (U.S.) and Rosie White (New Zealand). Additionally, former UCLA coaches Jill Ellis (U.S. head coach) and Aline Reis (Brazil goalkeeper) will be in France.

Canada is in Group E with New Zealand, Cameroon and the Netherlands and will open Women's World Cup play on June 10 against Cameroon before facing New Zealand on June 15 and Netherlands on June 20.
