May 27, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Top-ranked UCLA has been selected as the No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and the No. 1 seed in the Los Angeles Regional, it was announced today by the NCAA. This marks the second time in program history that the Bruins will be the tournament's top seed and the third time in program history receiving a top-two seed.
UCLA (47-8) will open postseason play against the No. 4 seed in the Los Angeles Regional, Omaha (31-22-1) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. PT. No. 2 Baylor (34-17) and No. 3 Loyola Marymount (32-23) play the first game of the regional at 1:00 p.m. PT on Friday. Each of the 16 NCAA Regionals features a four-team, double-elimination format.
The Bruins have now received a national seed four times in the John Savage era. UCLA was the No. 1 national seed in 2015, the No. 2 seed in 2012, and the No. 6 seed in 2010.
UCLA will be hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2015, when they were the No. 1 national seed. UCLA is making its 11th NCAA Tournament Appearance under head coach John Savage, who has helmed the program since 2005. This year marks the 23rd all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Bruins.
UCLA had arguably the best regular season in program history in 2019, setting new program standards for regular season wins and conference wins (24), and winning the Pac-12 Championship for the fourth time in the Savage era. The Bruins enter the postseason on a 10-game winning streak, a season-best and the longest since the Bruins reeled off 11 straight to close the 2013 season en route to the program's first-ever National Championship.
The 64-team NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed on ESPNU's hour-long selection show Monday at 9 a.m. (PT).
