June 02, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-seed UCLA baseball team belted four home runs in Sunday afternoon's 11-6 victory over No. 2-seed Baylor in an elimination contest of the Los Angeles Regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA's victory against Baylor (35-19) propelled the Bruins toward Sunday evening's showdown against Loyola Marymount (34-23). The Bruins must defeat LMU on Sunday night and again on Monday in order to advance from the NCAA Regional round to the NCAA Super Regionals. LMU can advance from the Los Angeles Regional with a win over UCLA on Sunday night.
ย
Jake Pries and Michael Toglia each went 2-for-3 for the Bruins (49-9), as each player registered two RBI. Pries finished the afternoon with a game-high three runs. In addition, Noah Cardenas and Garrett Mitchell each went 2-for-4.
ย
UCLA received home runs from Pries, Toglia, Cardenas and Ryan Kriedler. Mitchell finished with two triples, pushing his single-season total to 11 and setting the program's single season triples record.
ย
"It felt like we needed to keep putting up runs," UCLA head coach John Savage said. "It wasn't a safe game. It felt like Baylor's very offensive, very experienced middle of the lineup, one of the better hitting lineups in the country and certainly in the Big 12. They're dangerous. It's all hands on deck right now and, fortunately, we did enough."
ย
Right-hander Felix Rubi (2-0) secured his second victory of the season, limiting Baylor to one run and one hit through three innings in relief. In all, five UCLA relief pitchers combined to hold Baylor to three runs and five hits in eight innings.
ย
Baylor starting pitcher Tyler Thomas (1-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs through three frames.
ย
Trailing 3-2 after two innings and 4-3 in the fourth inning, the Bruins (49-9) pushed ahead with a three-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth inning. Those two frames helped UCLA secure a 9-4 advantage after five innings.
ย
In the fourth inning, Jake Pries drew a leadoff walk and Michael Toglia followed with a base-hit through the left side. With runners at the corners and nobody out, Jeremy Ydens lined a run-scoring double to the gap in left-center field. Pries scored from third and Toglia advanced home from first base on a miscue in left field. After moving to third base on a single by Cardenas, Ydens scored on a sacrifice fly to right-center field by Jack Stronach.
ย
Baylor answered in the top of the fifth with one run, before UCLA extended its margin to 9-5 in the bottom half of the inning. Pries lined a one-out double to left field, and Toglia cranked his team-leading 15th home run of the season. Two at-bats later, Cardenas deposited a solo home run to left field.
ย
Leading 9-6 midway through the sixth inning, the Bruins added to their cushion with a two-run home run by Kreidler in the bottom of the frame.
