Ogbonnia Becomes USATF U20 Shot Put Champion, as UCLA Duo Caps Weekend in Florida

MIRAMAR, Fla. โ Freshman UCLA track & field thrower Otito Ogbonnia captured first place in the shot put at the USATF U20 Championships, as both he and Munir Kabbara capped their weekend at the Ansin Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Ogbonnia's top throw of 21.42m (70-3.5) on his final attempt of the afternoon marked a UCLA school record with six-kilogram shot put, helping the Houston, Texas, native slide to first place ahead of Kentucky's Joshua Sobota, who finished second. His throw also ranks fourth all-time in USATF U20 history. Up next for Ogbonnia will be the 2019 Pan Am U20 Championships, slated for July 19-21 in San José, Costa Rica.

On Saturday, Ogbonnia competed in the discus, placing third with an effort of 56.90m (186-8), which he achieved on his first throw. Youngtown State's Zach Gehm placed first a mark of 60.31m (197-10), followed by Sobota at 57.76m (189-6).

Kabbara raced in the 3000m steeple, finishing in fifth place with a time of 9:34.33. Washington's Alex Slenning captured the event title, crossing the finish line at the 9:04.57 mark. During UCLA's 2019 track & field season, Kabbara was a first-place finisher in the event at USC.
