SAN FRANCISCO โย UCLA beach volleyball seniorย Izzy Careyย and men's volleyball senior Micah Ma'aย have been named Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal recipients for 2018-19, the conference announced Tuesday.
A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Carey, a Business-Economics major with a double minor in Music History and Accounting, was a member of UCLA's back-to-back NCAA Championship beach volleyball teams in 2018 and 2019. She was named to the NCAA and Pac-12 All-Tournament Team in 2019 and holds the Bruin single-season records for most wins (36) and best winning percentage (.947). Carey was a 2018 first-team All-America and is UCLA's winningest player in program history (123). She was named the 2019 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and the winner of the Academic and Student Services "SUCCESS" Award. Carey also possesses a deep list of community service and volunteer work.
Ma'a, a Political Science major, was a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America selection and All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first-team honoree in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Currently playing with the U.S. National Team, he was a two-time winner of the Off the Block National Server of the Year Award and finished his Bruin career as the school's all-time record holder for most service aces (208). Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired inย June of that yearย after serving for 26 years as Conference Commissioner.
