Women's Soccer Team to Represent USA at World University Games

June 27, 2019 | Women's Soccer

The UCLA women's soccer team will represent the U.S. at the 30th Summer World University Games in Naples, Italy July 3-14.

A roster of 20 American-based UCLA players will comprise Team USA, with UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell leading the group. Among the Bruin players on the squad are FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup players Marley Canales, Ashley Sanchez and Viviana Villacorta, and U-20 World Cup qualifying players Delanie Sheehan and Karina Rodriguez.

"We are proud to be representing not only Team USA but UCLA at the World University Games," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "Having the opportunity to represent your country is always a tremendous honor, and we love being able to showcase the high-level of play that we see regularly in collegiate soccer. Additionally, this gives our team, including our incoming freshmen, a chance to train together prior to the fall season. We are really looking forward to this experience as a team."

UCLA finished the 2018 season with a 17-3-2 record and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth time in the last six years. The Bruins ended the season on a 13-game unbeaten streak, having tied North Carolina in the quarterfinals before falling in penalty kicks.

The U.S. competes in Pool D with Italy and Japan in the 12-team tournament and will kick off play on July 4 against Italy before facing Japan on July 6. The quarterfinal round is on July 8, with the semifinals taking place on July 10. The medal matches take place on July 12.

The World University Games are organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The 12-day event features student-athletes under the age of 25 competing in 222 medal events across 18 summer sports including archery, athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, judo, soccer, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and water polo.

The Olympic Channel will live stream the World University Games at olympicchannel.com, beginning with the Opening Ceremony on July 3 at 1pm PT. Women's soccer will be live streamed from the semifinal round on.
