Bergin Named a Freshman All-American

June 05, 2019 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA right-handed pitcher Jesse Bergin has been named a Freshman All-American, it was announced on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball.

He becomes the 12th Freshman All-American pitcher at UCLA in the John Savage era (since 2005) and the fifth in the last five years. He joins an elite group of Bruin freshman All-American hurlers including Trevor Bauer (2009), Gerrit Cole (2009), Adam Plutko (2011), David Berg (2012), and Griffin Canning (2015). UCLA has had either a position player of pitcher earn Freshman All-America honors in five consecutive seasons.

Bergin is 5-0 on the season with a 4.43 ERA over 17 appearances, including 15 starts. Over 67 innings, he's struck out 75 batters against just 25 walks.

The Studio City, Calif. native started off the year especially hot, allowingย no earned runs in his first two starts and just one earned over his first three outings. ย

In his debut start on Feb. 17, he struck out a season-best nine batters and allowed just two hits while pitching into the sixth in an 11-1 triumph over St. John's.

He followed that up with arguably his best start of the season, limiting then-No. 19 Georgia Tech to just two hits over six shutout innings on Feb. 24.

Bergin currently ranks sixth in the country among freshmen pitchers with a 10.21 strikeouts per nine innings ratio. The Harvard-Westlake product has struck out a batter per inning or better in 10 of his 17 outings this year.
