Wilson Scores Eight Points on Day Two of NCAA Championships

June 06, 2019 | Track & Field

AUSTIN – Alyssa Wilson earned First Team All-America honors in both the hammer throw and shot put for the second-straight outdoor season, as she helped the UCLA track & field women's program muster eight points on the second day of the NCAA Championships.

Much like the Pac-12 Championships in Tucson, Ariz., unlucky weather and extensive lightning delays caused shifts in the schedule, forcing Wilson to quickly rush from the hammer to the warm-ups of the shot put.

Despite the adversity, she opened her brilliant day in the hammer, where she made it to the final round and heaved 69.75m (228-10) on her fourth attempt of the day to slide into third place. This marked Wilson's second top-eight finish in the hammer at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as she finished fourth last season.

At the conclusion of the hammer, Wilson raced to the shot put to begin warm-ups, as the sophomore faced a tight turnaround due to the lightning delay. Her second attempt of the evening, coming at 17.13m (56-2.5), earned her a spot in the final round and ultimately a seventh-place finish, making her a two-time First Team All-American in the event.

Ashlie Blake also competed in the shot put, capping her Bruin career with a 21st-place finish thanks to a heave of 15.68m (51-5.5).

In her NCAA Outdoor Championships debut, Elleyse Garrett made the most of it, finishing tied for ninth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.20m (13-9.25).

Also putting the finishing touches on her UCLA career, Meleni Rodney raced in the semifinal round of the 400m. She crossed the finish line at the 53.83 mark, putting her in 21st place overall.

UCLA will continue the NCAA Championships tomorrow, starting with Christina Chenault in the women's heptathlon at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
