UCLA Baseball Edged by Michigan, 3-2, in Game 1
June 07, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-seed UCLA baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Michigan in Game 1 of the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.
Michigan right-hander Karl Kauffman (10-6) limited the Bruins to two runs and four hits through 8.1 innings for the visiting Wolverines (45-19).ย
Kauffman helped Michigan carry a 3-0 shutout into the ninth inning before the Bruins (51-10) added two runs late. He had eight strikeouts and two walks through 8.1 innings.
ย
UCLA right-hander Ryan Garcia (10-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) and five hits. Garcia finished with eight strikeouts and one walk.
ย
"Kauffmann was outstanding," UCLA head coach John Savage said. "He threw the ball extremely well, pretty much handled us the entire evening. Jarron [Silva] had a really good at bat there, leading off the ninth with a walk. We strung some at bats together. I think that was the only inning we ran up five guys all evening. [Kauffmann] was really the story for us. Ryan [Garcia] was really good, too. Thought he threw the ball extremely well. Good first game."
ย
The Bruins had just three baserunners through the first eight innings before posing a threat in the bottom of the ninth. After a leadoff walk by Jarron Silva and an infield single by Mitchell, Ryan Kreidler pushed the baserunners over 90 feet on a flyout to center field. After an infield single by Chase Strumpf loaded the bases, Michael Toglia lined a two-run single to right field, reducing Michigan's cushion to 3-2 and putting baserunners on the corners.
ย
Michigan right-hander Jeff Criswell entered the game in relief of Kauffmann and recorded the save in his first relief outing of the year. He induced a pop-up to shallow left field for the second out of the inning before striking out Jack Stronach to end the game.
ย
The Wolverines totaled three runs off five hits, while UCLA finished the night having scored two runs off four hits. Michigan's Jesse Franklin was the only batter for either team to record at least two hits, going 2-for-4 with a two RBI.
ย
Michigan jumped ahead, 2-0, with a two-run third inning. The Wolverines received a two-out single to right field from Franklin, sending home Jordan Nwogu and Joe Donovan.
ย
Kauffmann did not allow any UCLA baserunners until the bottom of the fourth, issuing a four-pitch walk to leadoff batter Garrett Mitchell. Kauffman required just 48 pitches through the first four frames.
ย
Michigan added to its advantage with one run in the top of the eighth, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. Ako Thomas lined a one-out double to left field, advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Nwogu.
ย
UCLA and Michigan will resume the best-of-three series on Saturday evening. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. (PT) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game 2 will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
