UCLA Baseball Falls to Michigan, 4-2, in Game 3
June 09, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The Michigan baseball team overcame an early 2-1 deficit, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the ninth, to defeat No. 1-seed UCLA, 4-2, in the winner-take-all Game 3 of the NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional on Sunday evening.
ย
With Sunday night's victory at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium, Michigan (46-20) earned its first trip to the College World Series since 1984.
ย
Michigan left-hander Tommy Henry (10-5) limited UCLA (52-11) to two runs and seven hits through seven innings to pick up the victory. Ben Keizer threw two shutout innings in relief of Henry to pick up his second save of the season.
ย
"First off, I'd like to congratulate Michigan," UCLA head coach John Savage said. "They did a heck of a job this weekend, have to give them credit. It was a great series, as good of a Super Regional as there was out there. Tough one. This is an historic team, really. The team that won the most games in the history of UCLA. They hadn't lost a series all season long. I've never really heard of that. This one's a very tough one to take. We win as a team, and we lose as a team."
ย
UCLA's Jeremy Ydens went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jake Pries went 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
ย
Michigan left fielder Christian Bullock went 2-for-3, scoring two of the Wolverines' four runs. Ydens and Bullock were the only players in the game to record at least two hits.
ย
Trailing 2-1 after three innings, Michigan secured a 3-2 cushion with a two-run fifth inning. With Bullock at second base and Jack Blomgren on third, Ako Thomas lined a two-run base-hit up the middle to send home both baserunners.
ย
Michigan added one run in the top of the ninth, opening the frame with a leadoff triple by Bullock. After Blomgren drew a walk, Bullock scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to left field Joe Donovan.
ย
UCLA put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. Ydens singled to right field and Noah Cardenas was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second base. Pinch-hitter Jake Moberg skied a fly out deep to the warning track in right-center field, allowing Ydens and Cardenas to tag up one base. Keizer induced a game-ending groundout by Matt McLain to secure the win for Michigan.
ย
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, UCLA tied the game 1-1 on Pries' solo home run to left field. In the bottom of the third, the Bruins took a 2-1 lead after Garrett Mitchell opened the frame with a triple and scored on an ensuing groundout by Ryan Kreidler.
ย
UCLA right-hander Kyle Mora (3-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run and four hits in 3.2 innings of relief. Bruins' starting pitcher Nick Nastrini surrendered two runs and one hit through four frames, recording four strikeouts and two walks.
ย
The Bruins concluded their 2019 campaign with a 52-11 record, having set the program's single-season record for victories (52) and having won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship.
