EKATERINBURG, Russia – Michaela Onyenwere and Team USA reached the semifinals of the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series and ultimately finished fourth on Wednesday afternoon in Russia.
Onyenwere scored a team-high six points to help USA edge France, 16-15, in the final game of pool play. She nailed four two-pointers, which count as one point in 3x3 play, and connected on a jumper from beyond the arc. Onyenwere also grabbed six rebounds in the nail-biting victory.
"The aggression level and physicality of international basketball is a lot different, and it was an adjustment," said Onyenwere.
In the quarterfinals, USA breezed past Belarus, 20-13. The red, white and blue went 12-for-25 inside and 3-for-7 from downtown. Onyenwere contributed five points and also had a team-high-tying eight rebounds.
With the seven-point win, Onyenwere and USA advanced to the semifinals to face France in a rematch of the team's pool play finale. Onyenwere knocked down a turn-around jumper to give USA a 10-9 advantage with three minutes and change remaining, but France responded with a 6-1 run to close the contest to reach the finals, where they took down Russia by a final score of 15-14.
"I'm having a lot of fun out here, and I'm very grateful to have this opportunity," added Onyenwere.
Onyenwere and Team USA will next compete in the 2019 Pan American Games, which will take place Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru. Prior to the games, the team members will report to Colorado Spring, Colo., for training camp from July 23 to Aug. 5.
