FRENCH LICK, Ind. - In just her fifth professional event, UCLA women's golf alum Patty Tavatanakit recorded her first victory, winning the Donald Ross Classic at French Lick Resort on Saturday.
After opening the tournament with a 5-under 66 on Thursday to take the 18-hole overnight lead, Tavatanakit shot a 1-under 70 in Friday's second round, entering Saturday's final round two strokes back. Tavatanakit fired a bogey-free round on Saturday, shooting a 7-under 64 on three front-nine birdies and four on the back nine to finish at 13-under 200, winning by three strokes.
Tavatanakit turned professional at the U.S. Women's Open in late May and tied for 34th. In her first two Symetra Tour events in late June, she tied for 14th at the Island Resort Championship and finished solo second at the Prasco Charity Championship. Tavatanakit opened the month of July with a T-15 showing at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, shooting a final-round 61 while flirting with a 59.
Tavatanakit was a WGCA First Team All-American and NCAA Regional individual champion both seasons she played with the Bruins, winning seven career titles.
The Donald Ross Classic is in its third year of existence, and all three winners have been Bruins. Erynne Lee won with a score of 12-under 201 in 2017, while Stephanie Kono raised the trophy with a total of 11-under 202 in 2018.
