Ogbonnia Travels to Costa Rica for Pan American U20 Championships

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica โ€“ UCLA standout thrower Otito Ogbonnia will represent Team USATF at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships, which are set for July 19-21 at the National Stadium in San José, Costa Rica.

Ogbonnia, who most recently became the USATF U20 Championships shot put champion, is one of only 84 athletes who will represent the United States. He earned the honor on June 23 when he posted a throw of 21.42m (70-3.5) on his final attempt to capture first place in Miramar, Fla.

In his freshman season in Westwood, Ogbonnia made an immediate impact for the UCLA throwers. Under throwers coach John Frazier and UCLA Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Avery Anderson, Ogbonnia qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put, where he finished 10th at 19.44m (63-9.5) to earn Second Team All-America honors. He scored six points at the Pac-12 Championships, taking fourth in the shot thanks to a PR of 19.59m (64-3.25) and eighth in the discus at 53.22m (174-7).

Thirty-one nations will compete at the 20th edition of the meet. Team USATF athletes will be led by head coaches Pamela Marquez of Heritage Christian School and Michael Lawson of Durham, N.C. To view the full coaching staff announcement, click here.
