Guttormsen Earns Fourth Place at European Athletics U23 Championships

GÄVLE, Sweden – Pole vault sensation Sondre Guttormsen finished the European Athletics U23 Championships in fourth place, as he represented the country of Norway and the Bruin track & field program.
Guttormsen, who tied for eighth in the qualifying round, cleared 5.50m (18-0.5) on his first attempt in the finals. He passed his final attempt at 5.60m before coming up just short at 5.65m. A total of 12 competitors competed in the finals.
It was an explosive freshman campaign for Guttormsen, who is UCLA's indoor record holder at 5.73m (18-9.5) and is tied for fourth outdoors at 5.60m (18-4.5). He was the Pac-12 outdoor champion and finished the 2019 outdoor season as a Second Team All-American when he notched ninth place at the NCAA Championships.
The 2019 European Athletics U23 Championships were highlighted by five championship records across the four days of competition at the Gunder Hagg Stadium. A total of 1,105 athletes representing 49 Member Federations – along with 14 Authorised Neutral Athletes (ANA) – entered.
