LEVERKUSEN, Germany โ UCLA pole vault phenom Sondre Guttormsen is Tokyo bound.

Competing at the Bayer Classics in Germany, Guttormsen cleared 5.80m (19-0.25), the qualifying height for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, to earn a silver medal. Guttormsen notched the qualifying height on his second attempt. He also topped his own Norwegian national record by five centimeters.ย ย

It's been quite a year for Guttormsen in 2019. He most recently finished fourth at the European Athletics U23 Championships with a mark of 5.50m (18-0.5). During his freshman season in Westwood, he was the Pac-12 outdoor champion and finished the 2019 season as a Second Team All-American when he earned ninth place at the NCAA Championships. He is UCLA's indoor record holder at 5.73m (18-9.5) and is tied for fourth outdoors at 5.60m (18-4.5).
