UCLA softballers past and present represented four different countries in two tournaments last week, as five Bruins played in the USA Softball International Cup in Columbus, Ga., while a trio of players took part in the European Softball Federation Women's European Championship in the Czech Republic.
The United States Women's National Team won gold for the second year in a row at the USA Softball International Cup, which featured rising redshirt senior Rachel Garcia and Bruin alums Ally Carda and Delaney Spaulding, with UCLA alum Tairia Flowers a member of the coaching staff. A pair of rising sophomores were a part of the USA U-19 WNT squad, as Megan Faraimo and Kelli Godin won the bronze medal.
Garcia pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings across four games, earning a win against Mexico (July 6) when she struck out eight in four innings. Overall, she fanned 11, allowing just one hit and four walks. At the plate, Garcia posted at-bats in seven of 10 contests, hitting .353 (6-for-17) with three runs batted in and three walks. She had a two-run double versus Peru (July 2) and the game-ending RBI single against Mexico.
Spaulding was the only player to appear in all 10 games, batting .308 (8-for-26) with a home run, five RBI and three runs. She had three hits versus Peru, including a two-run homer and a pair of doubles, adding another three-hit game in the gold-medal contest against Japan (July 7).ย
Cardaย pitched 12 1/3 innings in five games in the circle, striking out 17 and giving up two runs, six hits and three walks. She picked up a pair of victories, defeating Peru, striking out eight in four shutout innings. Carda also earned the win in the gold-medal game versus Japan, striking out three in three frames. At the plate, she scored a run in five plate appearances.
Faraimoย pitched in four games for the U-19 WNT, earning three wins, including one in the bronze-medal contest versus Scrap Yard Fast Pitch (July 7), striking out four in three shutout innings. Faraimo also had wins against Chinese Taipei (July 1), striking out three in 2 1/3 shutout innings, and the Philippines (July 2), fanning nine in five shutout frames. Her longest, and perhaps her best, performance came on July 3 against the USA Women's National Team, as she held strong for 9 1/3 innings, striking out eight before the U-19 team fell in the 10th. For the tournament, Faraimoย struck out 24 in 19 2/3 innings.
Godinย appeared in all 10 games, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with nine runs scored, while going a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. She also scored a pair of runs in three contests (Peru, Philippines, China - July 2).
At the Women's European Championship, rising junior Alana Snow represented Great Britain, which finished third, earning her country a spot in the Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier in the Netherlands later this month. The winner of that tournament, which will be played July 23-27, will earn a berth into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Snow appeared in seven of 11 games, making four starts, hitting .500 (6-for-12) with four RBI, eight runs and two steals.
