BRUINS TRAVEL TO HAWAII FOR THREE MATCHES
The UCLA women's volleyball team heads west over the Pacific Ocean this week, landing in Honolulu for three matches at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Bruins will play three times in as many days, starting Thursday against Utah Valley (7:45 p.m. PT/4:45 p.m. HT). UCLA faces West Virginia on Friday (7:45 p.m. PT/4:45 p.m. HT) and concludes the weekend against No. 18 Hawaii (10 p.m. PT/7 p.m. HT) on Saturday. The Bruins finish up their non-conference regular-season schedule at The Thunderdome on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m.
SCOUTING THE UTAH VALLEY WOLVERINES
Utah Valley (2-5) dropped its first four matches of the season, including ranked losses to Marquette and BYU, rebounded with two wins in a row before ending last weekend with a defeat versus ranked Utah. The Wolverines are averaging 11.88 kills, 1.40 aces, 13.36 digs and 2.76 blocks per set, hitting .182 as a team. Sophomore Kazna Tarawhiti leads the team with 4.04 kps, while redshirt junior Bailey Christensen is second at 2.18. Senior Madi Wardle (5.36 assists per set) and redshirt junior Jaysa Funk Stratton (4.76) split the setting duties. Junior Seren Merrill is tops on the squad with 4.12 dps, while seniors Makaila Jarema (1.59) and Jasmine Niutupuivaha (1.16) are each posting at least one block per set. The Bruins and the Wolverines will be meeting for the first time.
SCOUTING THE WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS
After winning its first four matches of the season, West Virginia enters the weekend with two losses in a row to San Diego State and Arizona. The Mountaineers are averaging 12.77 kills, 1.00 aces, 13.91 digs and 2.32 blocks per set, hitting .223 as a team. Sophomore Kristina Jordan leads the team with 3.76 kps, sophomore Kristin Lux is second at 2.82 and junior Briana Lynch is third with 2.73 kps. Sophomore Lacey Zerwas quarterbacks the offense and is averaging 10.36 assists per set. Junior Alexa Hasting anchors the backcourt and is notching 4.36 dps, while redshirt junior Audrey Adams is tops with 1.15 bps. The Bruins and the Mountaineers will be meeting for the first time.

Hawaii is 6-0 on the season, which includes victories over San Diego and Washington during the opening weekend. The Rainbow Wahine are averaging 13.64 kills, 0.92 aces, 13.68 digs and 3.04 blocks per set. Redshirt junior Jolie Rasmussen is tops on the team with 4.05 kps, while freshman Hanna Hellvig is at 2.87 kps. Seniors Bailey Choi (10.92 assists per set) and Norene Iosia (9.43) share setting duties. The Bruins and the Rainbow Wahine had met every season since 1974, the first year of women's volleyball at Hawaii, before category 4 Hurricane Lane canceled UCLA's plans last August. UCLA leads the all-time series, 38-37, and has won four in a row in Honolulu. The Bruins won in three in 2014 and 2016, in four in 2015 and in five in 2017. UCLA is 26-28 at Hawaii.
