Six different Bruins tied for the team lead in scoring with juniors Nicolas Saveljic and Felix Brozyna-Vilim, sophomores Ashworth Molthenย and Jake Cavano, and freshmen Gabe Discipulo and Jack White all scoring two goals apiece. Freshman Bernardo Mauriziย played the entire game in the cage for the Bruins making six stops while surrendering 10 goals (only two at full strength, seven power play goals and one penalty).
The Bruins got on the board first when freshman Andy Rodgers scored his first goal of the season on a front court strike (7:31). Molthen put UCLA up 2-0 with a conversion on a penalty shot (4:54). Marc Weber got the Spartans on the board (4:22) with a power play goal to end the scoring in the first period with UCLA leading 2-1.
Weber opened the scoring in the second period (6:18) to tie the game at 2-2 with another power play goal. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the period. Nielsย Hofmeijer scored a power play goal to give SJSU a 3-2 lead (1:59).ย Saveljic answered with a power play goal (1:35) to tie it at 3-3.ย Molthenย found the back of the net for his second of the game from the front court to give UCLA a 4-3 lead (1:00). But Brad Dennis answered with a power play goal for the Spartans (0:24) to tie it at 4-4.ย Cavano gave the Bruins a 5-4 lead on a strike from the front court (0:08). But it was short-lived as Emerson Trout scored from distance at the buzzer to end the scoring in the second period with the game tied at 5-5.
Freshman Tommy Gruwell converted a penalty shot to open the scoring in the third period (7:21), giving the Bruins a 6-5 lead. Adam Badoย scored the equalizer from the front court at the 6:10 mark of the third to tie it at 6-6. But the Bruins reeled off three straight to end the period.ย Brozyna-Vilim scored from two meters (5:54), Saveljic scored his second from the front court (4:17) and Cavano did the same (3:34) to give the Bruins a 9-6 lead they would never relinquish. Giacomo Lovatelli trimmed the lead to 9-7 on a power play (2:01), but freshman Cameron Reagan answered with his first of the game on a power play for UCLA (1:26) to end the scoring in the period with UCLA leading 10-7.
Weber completed his hat trick on a penalty shot to open the scoring in the fourth quarter (7:34), cutting the lead to 10-8. But White scored his ninth goal of the year on a power play (7:00) to push the lead to 11-8. Then Bado scored his second of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (5:25) to cut the Bruins' lead to 11-9.ย Discipulo stepped up and scored on a power play (4:39) to extend the lead to 12-9, followed by a second score from Brozyna-Vilimย atย two meters (2:12) to put UCLA up 13-9. Hofmeijer added his second of the game for SJSU on a power play (1:31) to make it 13-10. But Discipulo added his second of the game from two meters on the Bruins' next possession (1:14) to push the lead to 14-10. White ended the scoring with a goal from the front court (0:24) to provide the 15-10 final.
UCLA returns to action later today with an exhibition game against Pro Recco at 5:00 p.m. PT.
