Bruins Fall in Three at No. 18 Hawaii

HONOLULU -ย Senior Savvy Simo had 10 kills and seven digs, while sophomore Kelli Barry added 13 digs, but the Bruins dropped a three-setter at No. 18 Hawaii on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-23.

Junior Mac May produced nine digs and seven kills, junior Jenny Mosser and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych each had five kills and sophomore Devon Chang tallied 13 assists, six digs and two aces. The Bruins (5-3) hit .160 as a team.

The only lead for the Bruins in set one was when Hawaii (9-0) misfired on the first serve of the match, as the Rainbow Wahine scored the next four and never looked back. UCLA scored just two points off its serve, falling 25-15. Simo recorded four kills, May added three and Barry posted six digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .455 to .171.

The Bruins were down 7-3 in set two before reeling off five in a row on three Mosser kills, one by May and a UH attack error. The last lead for UCLA was at 10-9, but the Bruins were still able to make the Rainbow Wahine earn the second set win. Down 22-13, UCLA scored five in a row and nine of 10 to get to within one. Kills by Simo and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan, a Ryan/Mosser block and two UH errors made it 22-18. Following a sideout, Simo and May kills, a block by Mosser and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith and a Hawaii error cut the deficit to 23-22. But the Rainbow Wahine scored the next two to win it by three. Hadrych and Simo each posted three digs in the second, May added seven digs and Barry had five digs, as the Bruins out-hit Hawaii, .196 to .176.

Set three featured 13 ties and seven lead changes, with neither team leading by more than three. UCLA's largest lead was two at numerous spots, including as late as 22-20, but Hawaii scored five of the next six points to win the third by a score of 25-23. Simo had three kills and four digs in the third, as the Bruins were out-hit, .214 to .091.
