LOS ANGELES - Senior Savvy Simo and junior Mac May combined for 27 kills and only one hitting error in 59 attempts, as both hit over .400 in the Bruins' sweep against Arizona State on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-13, 25-14, 25-20.
May produced a match-best 15 kills and one error in 31 attempts for a .452 hitting percentage, while Simo was error-free with 12 kills in 28 attempts (.429). Senior Cali Thompson had 23 assists and five digs and sophomore Devon Chang posted 11 assists and six digs, as the Bruins (7-4, 2-0 Pac-12) hit .311 as a team. Sophomore Kelli Barry recorded 16 digs, junior Jenny Mosser had six kills, redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith posted five blocks and sophomore Hawley Harrer had four kills and three blocks.
The Bruins' biggest deficit in set one was only one. Down 4-3, UCLA got kills by Smith and May and an Arizona State (9-4, 1-1 Pac-12) attack error to take the lead for good. Leading 9-8, six in a row on two kills by redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan, a kill and ace from May, a kill by Simo and an ASU error put the Bruins up by seven at 15-8. At 20-13, the Bruins closed out the set with the final five on two May kills and a solo block, a solo stuff from Smith and an ASU error to win the opener, 25-13. May was 7-for-9 with no errors and four digs in the first, Simo was 4-for-7 and Ryan was 3-for-3, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils, .467 to .065. Barry added seven digs.
Similar to set one, the last lead for Arizona State in set two came at 4-3. Seven in a row on two Simo kills, an ace and kill from Mosser, a Smith solo block and two ASU errors to go ahead 10-4. The Bruins' lead reached double figures for the first time in set two at 19-9, as a Smith solo block and a Harrer kill wrapped up a 25-14 victory. May and Mosser both had three kills, as the Bruins hit .242 and limited the Sun Devils to a -.042 percentage.
The Bruins scored the first six points in set three on two May aces, kills by Mosser and Simo, a Ryan/Mosser block and an ASU attack error. Six would be the largest edge in set three, as Arizona State chipped away and eventually took its first advantage at 17-16, leading by as many as two at 19-17. The next two points were ASU errors to even things at 19. Tied at 20, the Bruins recorded the final five points on two May kills, a Ryan/Harrer block and back-to-back Harrer kills to win the third, 25-20. Simo was 6-for-12 with no errors, while May was 5-for-12, as each posted four digs. Barry added six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils, .250 to .167.
The Bruins return to Pauley next Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. against Washington State. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network and will also feature free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
