LOS ANGELES – UCLA's track and field team continues its indoor regular season this weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. The competition is held at the indoor track at the Albuquerque Convention Center and is hosted by the University of New Mexico. The meet is slated to commence on Friday, Feb. 7 and run through Saturday's program.
Friday's meet schedule begins with the men's and women's "B" pole vault competition at 3:00 p.m. MT/2:00 p.m. PT. The last event on the track Friday evening is the women's 200m, with the gun slated to go off at 6:40 p.m. PT. Saturday's program opens with the men's and women's "A" pole vault at 8:30 a.m. PT and runs through the women's 4x400m relay at 2:10 p.m. PT. BRUINS IN THE RANKINGS
The UCLA men's squad checked in at No. 22 on the United States Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll this week, marking the third-straight week the men have cracked the top 25. The Bruin women enter this weekend's competition fifth in the West Region rankings.
FRIDAY, FEB. 7
The first day of the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge features junior Alyssa Wilson, who is slated to compete in the weight throw on Friday. Wilson is coming off a victory in the event last week at the UNM Team Open in which she tossed the implement 22.10m (72-06.25), good for the fifth-best mark in the nation.
Senior Harrison Schrage is in action in the men's long jump for the third time this season. Schrage last competed at the Dr. Sander Invite in New York City, where he cleared 7.51m (24-07.75) for the event victory, posting the fifth-best indoor mark in school history. The women's competition Friday features a quartet of Bruins: Jazmin Moss, Hawa Kamara, Jai Gruenwald, and Indiah Turner. Gruenwald, a sophomore from Chandler, Ariz., makes her season debut for the Bruins with a lifetime best of 5.85m (19-02.50) in the event, set back at the 2019 Pac-12 Track & Field Outdoor Championships.
The women's 200m caps the first day of competition and features eight Bruin underclassmen, including freshman Catherine Leger, who makes her second appearance for UCLA. Leger made an immediate impact in her debut at the Dr. Sander Invite earlier this year, clocking a time of 24.02 to take second place in the event and secure the fifth-fastest indoor time in school history. Leger also went on to run the second leg of the 4x400m relay, helping UCLA's squad to a second-place finish and a time of 3:40.11.
SATURDAY, FEB. 8
The qualifying rounds of the women's 60m hurdles is are tap Saturday morning, with the Bruins sending seven sprinters to toe the line in the event. Freshmen Chinyere Okoro and Makenzy Pierre-Webster are both scheduled to compete for the Bruins. The two women posted times of 7.42 and 7.47 in the event at the UW Indoor Preview (Jan. 18), good for the No. 4 and No. 6 spots on the all-time UCLA indoor list, respectively.
The women's 400m features a pair of Bruin representatives in sophomore Nyree Brown and freshman Bailey Umans. Brown makes her second appearance this indoor season after taking 22nd overall in the 400m at the UW Indoor Preview. Umans makes her UCLA track debut this weekend and enters the competition with a lifetime-best time of 55.4 in the event, a time she set in her high school outdoor career.
The women's and men's shot put competitions are also taking place on Saturday.
