ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Bruins' track and field squad finished up its weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday, coming away with a field event victory and some impressive performances in the 60m competition to cap a strong couple days in the sprints.
Alyssa Wilson continued her stellar start to the 2020 indoor season, taking the victory in the shot put with a launch of 17.16m (56-03.75). It was the junior's fourth win in the shot this season and seventh victory in the throws this year. She also took first place in the women's weight throw last night with a mark of 21.85m (71-08.25).
Freshman Chinyere Okoro capped her weekend in Albuquerque with a fifth-place finish in the women's 60m dash, clocking a time of 7.48 in the final. Okoro won her heat and took the third-fastest time in the prelims at 7.46, moving into a tie for sixth place all-time in the UCLA indoor record books in the event. Okoro's brilliant weekend began last night in the 200m, as she took ninth place overall with a career-best time of 23.83, the fourth-best indoor mark in school history.
Fellow first-years Kenyla Miles and Catherine Leger also toed the line for the Bruins in the women's 60m, going 6-7 in the qualifiers with times of 7.55 and 7.59, respectively.
The men's 60m saw sophomore Myles Webb take fifth place overall with a time of 6.78 in the final. Webb posted the second-fastest preliminary time of the day at 6.75, a PR-tying time that matched his current No. 5 mark in UCLA history. Junior Matthew DeRoos also impressed in the 60m dash, tying a career-best with a time of 6.87. DeRoos won his qualifying heat and finished fourth overall in the qualifying rounds.
The UCLA women's 4x400m relay team – comprised of Maddy Doane, Kyrah Johnson, Jade Hinds, and Nyree Brown – clocked a time of 3:46.98 to take seventh overall.
The Bruins were further active in the field in the triple jump competitions. DeRoos won his flight with a career-best leap of 14.65m (48-00.75), good for seventh place overall. Jazmin Moss and Hawa Kamara went 25-28 in women's competition, posting marks of 11.45m (37-06.75) and 11.25m (36-11.00). respectively.
Senior Michael Fancey made his fourth appearance in the pole vault this season and took 12th overall on Saturday, clearing 5.06m (16-07.25).

UCLA is back in action in a pair of locations next week, as the team is splitting squads and heading to the Don Kirby Invitational (Thursday, Feb. 13-14) and Husky Classic (Friday, Feb. 14-15). The competitions are held in Albuquerque, N.M., and Seattle, Wash., respectively.
