January 17, 2020 | Men's Volleyball

The No. 3 UCLA men's volleyball team (3-1) dropped its first match of the season in a non-conference contest played at UC San Diego (3-1) on Friday night. The Tritons controlled the match, holding the Bruins under a .200 hitting percentage for the night and also outpointing the visitors from the service line and on the block. Scores of the match were 22-25, 17-25, 21-25. The Bruins will return to action next week on the road at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge when it faces Penn State and Ohio State on Friday and Sunday.

In set one, UCSD opened up early leads of 2-4, 4-6 and 5-7. UCLA closed to 7-8, but the Tritons answered with three straight. The Bruins battled back to even the score at 11-all. After an Alex Knight kill tied the set at 13-all, UCSD streaked to a 14-18 advantage. An Austin Matautia ace and kill brought the Bruins to 16-18. After a service error, UCSD led 17-20. The Bruins made it 21-23 after back-to-back kills from Mads Kyed Jensen and Matautia, but the home team held on for a 22-25 win. UCLA hit .229 for the set to .371 for the Tritons.

The Tritons surged to a 2-10 lead to begin set two. A Daniel Matheney kill and ace cut the margin to 4-10. UCSD regained the momentum and pulled away to a 5-15 lead. The Tritons built the gap to 9-21. The Bruins rode Cole Ketrzynski's serve to a three-point streak to make it 14-22. A pair of kills from Matautia sliced the margin to 17-24 before UCSD prevailed 17-25. The Bruins hit .105 for the frame to .320 to UCSD, which had four aces.

UCLA moved out to a 7-4 advantage to begin set three. However, UCSD scored five of the next six points to reclaim the lead at 8-9 and then expanded the margin out to gaps of 10-13 and 12-17. UCLA pulled to within four at 16-20 after an ace from Knight. Kills by Kevin Kobrine and Matautia pulled UCLA to within four at 19-23. A swing by Knight saved a match point at 21-24, but UCSD tallied next for the win. The Bruins hit .167 for the set to .379 for UCSD.

UCSD outhit the Bruins for the match .360 to .179 and also won the battle of the block 5.0 to 3.0. The Tritons also had the edge from the service line, registering six aces to four for the Bruins. Matautia led UCLA with 10 kills while hitting .474. Matt Younggren led the Bruins with two blocks. Matheney added five digs and a block.
