Men's Tennis Wraps at Sherwood Tournament
January 20, 2020 | Men's Tennis
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. โ The UCLA men's tennis team concluded its time at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Sunday and sophomore Govind Nanda proved to be the top-performing Bruin.
Nanda advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw and teamed with Keegan Smith to reach the final round of doubles play. Nanda and Smith were two of 11 Bruins in action at Sherwood Country Club, where players from Stanford, Texas A&M and USC also took part.
Singles play began Friday, with Nanda, Eric Hahn, Connor Hance and Patrick Zahraj all notching victories in the round of 32. Hance, who clinched the team's first dual-match win earlier in the week, bested Guido Marson of Texas A&M in the only three-set decision of the four. Hahn was impressive in his win, beating No. 75 Barnaby Smith of Texas A&M by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Blaine Hovenier nearly upset No. 9 Mor Bulis of USC, but ultimately fell by a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 margin. Connor Rapp, Ben Goldberg and Max Wild also suffered losses.
Hahn tried his hand at another ranked opponent in the round of 16, but was cut down by 18th-ranked Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford, 6-4, 6-3. Nanda was the lone UCLA player to make it out of the round, as the sophomore beat No. 105 Noah Schachter of Texas A&M in straight sets.
Nanda would keep his run going in the next round, as he scored a top-10 win against Bulis, 6-0, 6-3. The Bruin would be stopped just short of the final, however, as he was edged by Rotsaert in three sets.
Rapp, Zahraj and seventh-ranked Keegan Smith posted wins in additional singles matches played. Smith's only singles action saw him defeat No. 54 Sangeet Sridhar of Stanford in a nailbiter, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (13). Rapp was felled by 54th-ranked Ryder Jackson of USC in the consolation quarterfinals.
Nanda/Smith was the lone UCLA tandem to advance out of the doubles round of 16, beating Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye of USC by a 6-4 score. In the quarterfinal round, the Bruins went point with Pierce Rollins and Stefan Storch of Texas A&M before coming on top of a 7-5 tiebreaker. Facing off against their second crosstown-rival counterparts, Nanda and Smith doubled up Bulis and Jackson to reach the final round. There, Nanda/Smith was beaten narrowly by Trojans Daniel Cukierman and Riley Smith, 7-5.
Zahraj and Bryce Pereira picked up a consolation victory versus Stanford's Sridhar and Filip Kolaskinski, 7-6 (3).
UCLA returns to dual-match play Saturday, when it welcomes San Diego State to Los Angeles Tennis Center for the start of ITA Kick-Off Weekend. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m., PT. San Diego and UCF will also square off Saturday at 9 a.m.
