No. 5 UCLA Takes Down No. 24 Marist, 14-4

ANN ARBOR, Mich. --ย No. 5 UCLA (7-1) received goals from 10 different players and cruised to a 14-4 win overย No. 24 Marist (0-6) in the third gameย of the Michigan Invitational on Sunday morningย atย Canham Natatorium. The Bruins improved to 3-0 all-time against the Marist Red Foxes.

The Bruins were led byย freshman Abbi Hill, sophomore Katrina Drake, sophomore Bella Baia, and senior Emily Skelly, with each scoring two goals. Junior Jahmea Bent got the starting nod and played the first half, registering two saves while allowing two goals. Freshman Quinn Winter played the second half and tallied five savesย while giving up twoย goals.

UCLA's first four goals were on power plays with senior Brooke Maxson (7:27), junior Roxy Wheaton (6:27), sophomore Bella Baia (5:26, 6-on-4), and freshman Hannah Palmer (3:04) providing the scoring touch. Hill scored from two meters off a nice feed from Wheaton (0:10) to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.

The Bruins pitched a shutout in the second period while scoring three more goals. Sophomore Val Ayala converted a penalty shot that was drawn by sophomore Ava Johnson (7:47) to open the scoring in the second. Baia added her second exclusion goal of the first half (5:14) and then Drake added a goal from set (4:23) to end the scoring in the period with the Bruins leading 8-2 at the break.

Sophomore Skylar Savar added her second goal of the season (5:17) from the front court and Drake netted her second of the game (1:28) on a counter to give the Bruins a 10-4 advantage. Johnson ended the scoring in the third (0:08) with a power play strike to give the Bruins an 11-4 lead heading into the fourth.

UCLA pitched another shutout in the fourth quarter while tacking on three more goals. Hill opened the scoring on the first possession with a strong shot from the front court (7:40). Skellyย then scored back-to-back goals (3:06 - front court;ย 0:47 - counter attack) to provide the 14-4 final.

UCLAย concludes play in the Michigan Invitational later today (12:00 p.m. PT) against No. 21 Wagner atย Canham Natatorium.
