UCLA Football Falls at Colorado, 48-42

November 07, 2020 | Football

BOULDER, Colo. โ€“ Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 20 of 40 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns as the UCLA football team lost at Colorado, 48-42, in the season opener for both teams at Folsom Field on Saturday evening.
ย
Thompson-Robinson accounted for five touchdowns โ€“ four in the air and one on the ground โ€“ and finished with nine carries totaling 109 yards.
ย
Trailing 48-35 midway through the fourth quarter, UCLA (0-1) cut the Colorado margin to 48-42 with under two minutes to play but was unable to recover an onside kick with 1:45 to play. The Bruins scored their final touchdown on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson to Mike Martinez.
ย
Tight end Greg Dulcich finished the contest with four receptions for a team-leading 126 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown reception.
ย
Colorado quarterback Sam Noyer completed 20 of 31 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown. Buffaloes' running back Jarek Broussard totaled 187 rushing yards on 31 carries and had three rushing touchdowns.
ย
UCLA reduced a 35-7 second-quarter deficit to as few as seven points in the third quarter, pulling to within 42-35 after a 26-yard touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson to Keegan Jones.
ย
The Bruins cut Colorado's lead to 35-14 before the intermission as Thompson-Robinson connected with Dulcich for a 52-yard touchdown strike at the 4:44 mark in the second quarter.
ย
Within the first five minutes of the third quarter, UCLA added a pair of touchdowns โ€“ the first, coming on a 65-yard run from Thompson-Robinson. After blocking a field goal attempt by Colorado, the Bruins used a six-play drive (covering 77 yards) to find the end zone, culminating on a 15-yard touchdown carry by Demetric Felton.
ย
The host Buffaloes had claimed a 35-14 cushion at halftime, taking advantage of four UCLA turnovers in the first half.
ย
"I think we put our defense in some adverse situations in the first half," said UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. "We dug too deep a hole in the first half to be able to come back when you're down 35-14 at half. We've got to do a better job securing the football. I thought our defense started off well. We forced them into a punt, but then we turned the punt over and gave a short field. There are things we can build on. I thought there were some newcomers and new players that flashed and did some really good things for us. We need to continue to grow and get better."
ย
Colorado took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, taking advantage of a fumble forced on a punt and an interception within UCLA territory. Each of the Buffaloes' first-quarter touchdowns resulted after Colorado claimed possession on turnovers within 30 yards of the end zone.
ย
UCLA reduced the Buffaloes' lead to 14-7 at the end of the opening quarter. The Bruins' six-play, 60-yard scoring drive was capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson to Felton.
ย
The Bruins will return to action against Utah on Friday, Nov. 13 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. (PT). UCLA's game will be nationally televised on FS1.
