UCLA Gymnastics Ranked Preseason No. 7
December 17, 2020 | Gymnastics
The UCLA Gymnastics team will begin the 2021 season ranked No. 7 in the preseason rankings, as voted on by the coaches of the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
The Bruins tallied 943 points in the voting, finishing just one point behind No. 6 Alabama. Florida will begin the year ranked No. 1 with 1,167 points and 16 first-place votes. Oklahoma, the 2019 NCAA champions, also tallied 16 first-place votes but ranks second with 1,152 points. LSU (1,076 points), Utah (1,073) and Michigan (1,060) round out the Top 5.
The Pac-12 have three teams in the Top 10 and all eight in the Top 36 - No. 4 Utah, No. 7 UCLA, No. 8 California, No. 13 Oregon State, No. 19 Washington, No. 21 Arizona State, No. 24 Arizona and No. 31 Stanford.
UCLA returns three All-Americans from last season's squad that finished the shortened season ranked No. 3 in the nation - senior Nia Dennis and juniors Margzetta Frazier and Norah Flatley. The Bruins, however, lose five All-Americans and perfect 10 scorers from its vaunted senior class, including 2020 Honda Award winner Kyla Ross, who is now UCLA's undergraduate assistant coach. Among those looking to replace those scores are freshmen Chae Campbell, Frida Esparza and Sara Ulias. Four would-be freshmen have either deferred enrollment or are redshirting in order to pursue the Olympics.
