Wilson, Okoro Lead Bruins on Day One of New Mexico Collegiate Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Bruins returned to the Albuquerque Convention Center for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, with junior Alyssa Wilson and freshman Chinyere Okoro posting impressive performances to lead UCLA in the first day of competition.
 
Wilson won the women's weight throw competition with a launch of 21.85m (71-08.25), good for her third victory in the event this indoor season. The Jackson, N.J., native also has three individual shot put titles to her credit in 2020 and is in action in the event tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. MT/9:00 a.m. PT.
 
Okoro made her 200m debut for the Bruins and did not disappoint, clocking a time of 23.84 to take ninth place overall and move into fourth on the UCLA all-time indoor list in the event. Freshmen Catherine Leger and Makenzy Pierre-Webster went 15-16 in the event, posting times of 24.07 and 24.14, respectively. Pierre-Webster is now eighth in indoor history in the event while Leger's time of 24.02 from the Dr. Sander Invite (Jan. 25) is still good for sixth all-time. Fellow first-year Maddy Doane took 27th place with a personal-best time of 24.68.
 
With today's performances from Okoro and Pierre-Wesbter, the No. 4 (Okoro), No. 6 (Leger), and No. 8 (Pierre-Webster) positions on UCLA's all-time indoor 200m record list are held by current freshmen.
 
The men's 200m competition saw freshman Ismail Turner also clock a PR, going 21.54 for 16th place overall. Redshirt freshman Chase Wells finished in 31st at 21.89.
 
A quartet of first-yearr Bruins took to the runway forthe women's pole vault. Camryn Thomson led the way with a second-place finish in the unseeded flight, clearing a personal-best 3.89m (12-09.00). Eden Henderson, Isabella Grant, and Mia Cervantes all cleared 3.74m (12-03.25), finishing in ninth, 11th, and 12th, respectively, on attempts. Grant and Cervantes both notched new PRs with their respective performances. 

Sophomore Nyree Brown toed the line for the Bruins in the women's 400m, taking 15th place with a career-best time of 57.96. It marked the first time Brown ducked under the 58-second barrier as a Bruin.
 
The men's long jump saw senior Harrison Schrage lead the way for the Bruins with a ninth-place finish and a mark of 7.29m (23-11.00). Junior Matthew DeRoos followed in 11th with a clearance of 7.08m (23-02.75).
 
UP NEXT
The Bruins are back tomorrow for day two of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Competition begins with the men's pole vault competition at 9:30 a.m. MT/8:30 a.m. PT. The first track action of the day is the qualifying heats of the women's 60m hurdles at 9:15 a.m. PT.
