
No. 3 UCLA Takes Down No. 19 Indiana, 12-9

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (12-1, 1-0 MPSF) used a decisive scoring run late in the second quarter and never looked back, beating No. 19 Indiana, 12-9, in the quarterfinals of the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Bruins improved to 14-0 all-time against Indiana, which fell to 3-3 on the season.
The Bruins were led by freshmen Abbi Hill (four goals) andย Hannah Palmer, who scored a hat trick for the second straight game today. Redshirt freshman Georgia Phillips got the start in goal and played the first three quarters and the first 5:30 of the fourth, tallying nine saves while allowing eight goals. Junior Jahmea Bentย played the final 2:30 of the fourth quarter, allowing one power play goal.
Indiana came out with confidence after their early upset in overtime over No. 9 UC Davis, battling the Bruins in the first period, trailing 3-2. Izzy Mandema got the Hoosiers on the board first (6:55) with a score from the front court. But Hill answered on the Bruins' next possession with a power play goal (6:30) to tie the game at 1-1. Rebecca Schofield gave IU a 2-1 lead with another front court heater (4:59). But UCLA had the answer again with sophomore Bella Baia scoring on a nice drive and finish (4:43) to knot it at 2-2. UCLA would take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter when sophomore Skylar Savarย scored on a power play (1:13).
UCLA dominated the second quarter, outscoring Indiana 4-1 to take a 7-3 lead into the break. Offensively, the Bruin freshman duo of Hill and Palmer scored all four goals in the second period. Hill completed her hat trick in the quarter with a score from the front court (4:34) and a penalty shot conversion (1:04). Both of Palmer's goals came from the front court (3:43 and 3:08).
The Hoosiers won the third quarter, 3-2, to close the gap to 9-6. All three of IU's goals were on 6-on-5 opportunities. Hill scored her fourth of the game with an exclusion goal (8:41) to extend the Bruins lead to 8-4. Junior defender Myna Simmons scored from two meters (3:43) to push the lead to 9-5. Zoe Crouch scored the final goal of the period for IU (0:31).
The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the final period. Tina Doherty trimmed the Bruins' lead to 9-7 with a penalty conversion (7:19), but Palmer answered on the next possession (6:51) with a strike from the front court to push the lead back to three. Again Indiana would cut it to two when Doherty scored a power play goal (6:23), but UCLA would get back-to-back goals to seal the win. Junior Roxy Wheaton would score on a drive (5:11) and junior Lexi Liebowitz would add a power play goal (2:49) to push the lead to 12-8. Doherty would net her fifth goal of the game on a power play with just :08 remaining to provide the 12-9 final.
UCLAย returns to action tomorrow in the semifinals of the Triton Invitational at 12:30 p.m. PT against tonight's winner of No. 5 UC Irvine/No. 8 Arizona State at Triton Pool.
