SAN FRANCISCO - For the second time this season, the Bruins have swept the Pac-12 Conference weekly awards, as junior Delanie Wisz was named Player of the Week, sophomore Megan Faraimo earned Pitcher of the Week honors and Lexi Sosa picked up Freshman of the Week accolades.
In six Bruin victories, Wisz had five hits in 12 at-bats (.417), nine runs batted in, four runs scored, three walks and two home runs. Three of her five hits came against ranked teams and proved to be instrumental to the outcome of the game. On Thursday against No. 16 Michigan, Wisz drove in the Bruins' second run in a 2-0 victory. On Friday versus No. 22 UCF, the junior had another big two-out hit, a three-run homer in the first inning, that proved to be the game-winning run in a 4-2 win. On Saturday against No. 18 Minnesota, Wisz broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, hitting a grand slam for the game's only runs.
Wisz is second on the team with five home runs and tied for first with 15 walks, adding a .359 batting average and 20 runs batted in.
In two games against ranked teams, Faraimo pitched 14 shutout innings, striking out 24 and giving up only seven hits and one walk. Versus Michigan, she fanned 11 in a five-hit blanking, walking none. Faraimo struck out the side twice. Two days later against Minnesota, the sophomore fanned 13, striking out the side once, limiting the Gophers to two hits and one walk.
Faraimo leads the Bruins with a 0.85 earned run average, a 13-1 record and 149 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings. She has gone the distance in all 10 of her starts, tossing five shutouts and limiting opponents to a .153 batting average. Faraimo is first in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (29.80), second in strikeouts, tied for second in wins, tied for sixth in shutouts and 12th in ERA.
Sosa pitched the 18th perfect game in UCLA softball history against Boston U. on Saturday, retiring all 15 batters she faced, striking out six. It was the Bruins' first perfect game since 2008. Sosa did not allow a run in 11 innings during the week, striking out 15 in three games. She also earned a win over St. John's on Tuesday, striking out seven in a two-hit shutout. At the plate, Sosa added five RBI and her first collegiate home run. Four of the RBI came in the contest versus Boston U., including a solo homer.
Sosa is 4-0 on the season with a 1.50 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 28 innings. She has pitched complete-game shutouts three times, which is tied for 19th in the nation. Sosa is also 4-for-8 (.500) at the plate with a homer and five RBI.
The Bruins also won all three awards on Feb. 11 following the opening weekend of the season. Faraimo was named Pitcher of the Week, while Maya Brady earned Player and Freshman of the Week accolades. Faraimo has won four weekly honors this season, being named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week three times (also Feb. 25) and NFCA National Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 25). It is the first weekly Pac-12 awards for Wisz and Sosa.
