THIS WEEK -- UCLA (8-8, 2-3 in MPSF), ranked No. 12 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, continues a break from Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) league action and plays three matches against Big West Conference teams beginning on Tuesday at No. 3 UCSB (12-2), followed by a Thursday date vs. CSUN (4-10) and a Saturday battle vs. No. 6 UC San Diego (13-3). This past Saturday night, No. 4 Long Beach State bested the Bruins in five sets (25-21, 16-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-13). Mads Kyed Jensen led the attack with a career-best 14 kills and added five aces for UCLA.

LAST MEETING -- UCLA lost to the Gauchos earlier this season on Feb. 19 in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 18-25) after hitting .169 in the match. Last season, it split a pair of matches, with each team winning on its home court -- at UCLA 25-20,25-16,25-21/at UCSB 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-12. The Gauchos are 12-2 this season with the lone losses coming in a pair of matches at No. 2 BYU. UCLA won in straight sets last Friday (2/28) at CSUN (25-22, 25-19, 25-18), outhitting the Matadors .421 to .216. Daenan Gyimah led UCLA with 10 kills and 6 blocks. Last season, CSUN swept the Bruins in the Matadome (22-25, 16-25, 23-25) after being outhit by the Matadors .417 to .200. UC San Diego is off to a program-best 13-3 start, including a pair of Big West Conference wins over No. 7 UC Irvine. The Tritons defeated UCLA in San Diego on Jan. 17 (22-25, 17-25, 21-25) with the Bruins swinging at a .179 rate. UCSD's losses have come to No. 5 Lewis, No. 10 Grand Canyon and No. 14 Concordia.
NOTES -- Daenan Gyimah has hit at least .400 in 9 of the 11 matches he has played in this season and ranks sixth in the NCAA at .490 ... Gyimah has earned first-team AVCA All-America honors in each of the last two seasons while also being the recipient of the Ryan Millar Award as the nation's top middle attacker ... UCSB (2/19--.169) and UCSD (1/17--.179) and are the only opponents to hold UCLA under .200 hitting % this season ... In matches it has won this season, UCLA is outhitting the opponent .365 to .201 and leading at the service line 68 aces to 32 --- In losses, UCLA is hitting .268 to .397 for its opponents and is trailing at the service line 45 aces to 46 ...
