STOCKTON, Calif. --ย No. 2 UCLA (18-2, 2-0 MPSF) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 13-8 win at No. 23 Pacific (3-13) on Sunday afternoon at Chris Kjeldsen Pool at the Pacific Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 27-0 all-time against the Tigers.
Sophomoreย Ava Johnson led the Bruins in scoring with a game-high, season-high, and career-high-tying four goals on five shots. Junior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage for the Bruins and playedย the first three quarters, tallying fiveย saves and three steals while allowing threeย goals. Freshman Quinn Winter played the fourth quarter and recorded one stop and one steal while allowing five goals.
The first quarter was all UCLA with the Bruins winning the period 4-0. Senior Emily Skellyย opened the scoring (6:23) with a score from the front court, followed by a goal from two meters by Johnson (4:37). Junior Lexi Liebowitzย made it 3-0 with a counter score (1:51) that was followed up by a strike from the front court (1:11) from senior Brooke Maxson.
Another dominant quarter followed with UCLA winning the second period, 4-1. Liebowitz opened the scoring on a counter (4:37) for her second goal of the game. Then sophomore Katrina Drake (3:26) and junior Myna Simmons (2:22) each scored power play goals for the 7-0 start. After a power play goal by Pacific's Ana Martinez doย Amaral (1:35), Johnson netted her second of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (0:10) to extend the lead to 8-1 at the break.
The Bruins' offense stalled in the third period with Pacific picking up two more goals to cut the Bruins' lead to 8-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
The two teams battled to a 5-5 draw in the fourth period. Johnson scored twice from two meters in the quarter (7:39 and 5:27). Drake got her second of the game on a counter (6:57) and sophomore Bella Baiaย scored from the front court (4:33) to make it 12-4. Then after three straight goals by the Tigers, freshman Brooke Dotenย scored from two meters (0:50) for her first goal of the game. Pacific's Lucy Davis scored from the front court (0:31) toย provide the 13-8ย final.
UCLAย returns to action on Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. PT when they travel to take on UC Irvine.
