BASEBALL
  • Trevor Bauer, RHP, Cincinnati Reds โ€“ Made one start over the last week, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven over six innings at Pittsburgh on Sept. 4. He is in the midst of a strong season, his first full campaign with the Reds, as he leads the NL in WHIP (0.86), complete games (2), and shutouts (2) while ranking among the league leaders in ERA (2.05, fourth) and strikeouts (61, seventh).
  • Griffin Canning, RHP, Los Angeles Angelsย โ€“ Canning has a 4.54 ERA in eight starts for the Angels this year. 2020 marks his first full season in the Los Angeles rotation.
  • Gerrit Cole, RHP, New York Yankees โ€“ Cole had 10 strikeouts in his last start on Sept. 5 at Baltimore, allowing one earned over six innings. He remains on the American League leaderboard in strikeouts (70, third), innings (52.0, sixth), and WHIP (1.10, 10th).
  • Brandon Crawford, SS, San Francisco Giants โ€“ Crawford batted .267 (4-15) over four games the past week. That span included a three-hit, six-RBI performance at Colorado on Sept. 6. He is slashing .267/.336/.422 for the season.
  • Pat Valaika,ย INF, Baltimore Orioles โ€“ Valaika is off to a hot start to September with the stick, as he batted .421 (8-19) last week with two doubles and three RBIs. He marked the start of the month with a 4-4 effort against the Mets, his first career four-hit game. He followed that up with a two-hit performance against New York on Sept. 2, giving him a .667 (6-9) average for the series. He's raised his batting average 96 points since Aug. 17 and is slashing .274/.317/.463 overall in his first season with the Orioles.
  • Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has his club out to a 30-12 start through 42 games. The Dodgers have the best winning percentage in the league at .714.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Norman Powell, G, Toronto Raptors โ€“ Powell averaged 8.3 points per game and made 6 of 16 attempts from 3-point range in four playoff contests last week. After falling behind in the best-of-seven series, 2-0, the Raptors tied the series (2-2) before losing to Boston in Game 5 on Monday night. Powell had 16 points off the bench in Monday's game. The Raptors return to action in Game 6 on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 3:40 p.m. PT (TV: ESPN).
  • Russell Westbrook, G, Houston Rockets โ€“ Westbrook averaged 17.8 points and 8.8 rebounds, shooting 41.9 percent, in four playoff games for Houston last week. He totaled 20 points and nine rebounds in a Game 7 win over Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Sept. 2, helping the Rockets advance to a best-of-seven series against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Western Conference semifinal series against the Lakers โ€“ currently tied at 1-1 โ€“ resumes on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. PT (TV: TNT).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Jordin Canada, G, Seattle Storm โ€“ Canada ('18) is averaging a career-high 5.6 assists for the Seattle Storm, the second-highest average in the league. Canada has started nine games for Seattle this season, as the Storm have compiled a league-best 16-3 record and clinched their playoff spot.
  • Seattle Associate Head Coachย Noelle Quinnย ('07) has helped guide the Storm to a league-best 16-3 record and a playoff berth. Quinn was elevated to Associate Head Coach for the duration of this shortened season.
  • Kari Korverย ('17) serves as the Director of Operations for the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks have gone 14-5 in the "Wubble" and have clinched a playoff berth.
  • Monique Billings, F, Atlanta Dream โ€“ย ย Billings ('18) is averaging career highs in points (8.5) and rebounds (8.7) per game for the Dream this season. Billings' 8.7 rebounds per contest are the fifth-highest average in the league. She has notched six double-digit rebound performances this season and opened the year with her first-career 30-point performance (Jul. 26).
  • Kennedy Burke, G/F, Indiana Feverย โ€“ Burke ('18) is averaging career highs in points (7.3), rebounds (1.8), and minutes (18.1) this season. Burke has earned four starts for the Fever in 2020 and has notched three games with at least 14 points. The Fever are two games back of a playoff berth with three games to play.
MEN'S SOCCER
  • UCLA alums Benny Feilhaber and Juan Cervantes returned to the program as assistant coaches, it was announced on Sept. 1 by head coach Ryan Jorden.
  • Frankie Amaya, MF, FC Cincinnati โ€“ Started and played the full 90 in both of Cincinnati's games last week. Recorded three shots between the two contests.
  • Jonathan Bornstein, D, Chicago โ€“ Subbed into both of Chicago's games last week, playing one minute against New England and 28 minutes against FC Cincinnati.
  • Abu Danladi, F, Nashville SC โ€“ Subbed on in both of Nashville's games, which both resulted in draws. He played 19 minutes against Orlando on Sept. 2 before recording a shot in 29 minutes of action against Miami on Sept. 6. ย 
  • Ryan Hollingshead, D, Dallas FC โ€“ Started and played the full 90 in Dallas' 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 2.
  • Erik Holt, D, Real Salt Lake โ€“ Started and played the full 90 against Minnesota on Sept. 6. It was his second start of 2020 and the seventh of his career.
  • Andy Rose, MF, Vancover Whitecaps โ€“ Started and played the full 90 in Vancouver's 3-2 win against Toronto FC on Sept. 5.
  • Kelyn Rowe, MF, New England Revolution โ€“ Appeared in both of New England's games last week, starting against New England on Sept. 2 and playing 12 minutes as a sub against Chicago on Sept. 6.
  • Jackson Yueill, MF, San Jose Earthquakes โ€“ Started and played the full 90 both of San Jose's games last week. He recorded three shots against LAFC on Sept. 2 and helped the Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw with Colorado on Sept. 5.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
  • Sarah Woldmoe, MF, Mal Pugh, F, Sky Blue FC; Ashley Sanchez, F, Washington Spirit (NWSL) โ€“ Woldmoe and Sanchez earned starts for their respective teams in a 2-1 victory by Sky Blue FC in the NWSL Fall Series opener Sept. 5. Woldmoe played the full 90, while Sanchez played the first half. Pugh entered the game in the 61st minute and assisted on the game-winning goal in extra time.
  • Sam Mewis, MF, Manchester City (England) โ€“ The 2014 Honda Sport Award winner started for Manchester City in its FA Women's Super League opener against Aston Villa, playing a strong 90 minutes in her squad's 2-0 victory on Sept. 5. Mewis had five shots in the game, including a header in the first 20 seconds of the game that went wide, and she also had a goal in the fifth minute called off due to an offside call.
  • Jessie Fleming, MF, Chelsea FC (England) โ€“ Fleming was available off the bench but did not play in Chelsea FC's 1-1 tie with Manchester United on Sept. 6.
  • Lauren Barnes, D, &ย Hailie Mace, F, Kristianstads DFF (Sweden) โ€“ Both players started and played 90 minutes in Kristianstads' 3-2 win at Pitea on Sept. 6.
  • Teagan Micah, GK, Arna-Bjørnar (Norway) - Micah earned the start in a 2-0 loss to Avaldsnes on Sept. 5 and made four saves in the match.
  • Siri Ervik, GK, Kolbotn (Norway) โ€“ Ervik earned a shutout victory over Lyn on Sept. 6, making two saves as her squad scored the game's only goal in the 87th minute.
  • Darian Jenkins, F, Bordeaux (France) โ€“ Jenkins, on loan from OL Reign, suited up for Bordeaux for the first time but did not play in the 4-4 draw with Reims.
MEN'S GOLF
  • PGA Tourย โ€“ Kevin Chappell will tee it up at this week's Safeway Open in Napa, Calif. (Thursday-Sunday).
  • PGA Tour Champions โ€“ Brandt Jobe, Scott McCarron, Steve Pate, Corey Pavin, Tom Pernice, Jr., Ken Tanigawa, and Duffy Waldorf will tee it up at this week's Sanford International (Friday-Sunday) in Sioux Falls, S.D.
  • Korn Ferry Tour โ€“ Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp will play at the Evans Scholars Invitational in Westchester, Ill. (Thursday-Sunday).
  • Mackenzie Tour Canada โ€“ Patrick Murphy (-3) tied for ninth at the Canada Life Series at TPC Toronto: Heathlands Course. The Tour stays at the TPC Toronto this week (Wednesday-Friday) at the Canada Life Series Championship, with Murphy back in the field.
  • European Tour โ€“ Pedro Figueiredo is in the field at this week's Portugal Masters in Vilamoura, Portugal (Thursday-Sunday).
WOMEN'S GOLF
  • LPGA Tour โ€“ The LPGA Tour returns to action with one of its Major tournaments, the ANA Inspiration, in Rancho Mirage, Calif. (Thursday-Sunday). Tiffany Joh, Bronte Law, Ryann O'Toole and Patty Tavatanakit are all in the field.
  • Symetra Tour โ€“ Lilia Vu (+2) tied for 29th at the Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Ind. (Sept. 4-6), while Beth Wu (+7) tied for 60th.
MEN'S TENNIS
  • Open wild-card selection Maxime Cressy (2016-19) earned the first Grand Slam win of his career, defeating Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The second round took Cressy to Arthur Ashe Stadium for a primetime matchup with fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, who proved too strong in a three-set decision. Cressy established his powerful serve in each match, registering 23 aces in the first match and 21 more in the second.
  • Marcos Giron (2012-14) captured his first-career Grand Slam victory in a 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 US Open first-round decision versus Australian Marc Polmans that took 3:45 to complete. No. 26 seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia ended Giron's journey in the second round, handing the 2014 NCAA singles champion a three-set loss.
  • Mackenzie McDonald (2014-16) teamed with Christopher Eubanks to reach the first Grand Slam quarterfinal round of his career. The pair defeated Luke Bambridge/Ben McLachlan, 6-3, 6-2, and Marcus Daniell/Philipp Oswald, 7-6(5), 6-3, before falling to No. 3 seed Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury, 6-2, 7-6(5). In singles play, McDonald jumped out to a two-set lead versus No. 30 seed Casper Ruud of Norway, but was unable to hold on in his US Open return.
  • Jean-Julien Rojer (2000-02) and partner Horia Tecau advanced to their first Grand Slam semifinal round since taking the top spot at the 2017 US Open. They will attempt to take another step toward recreating that performance Tuesday. After defeating Marcelo Arevalo/Jonny O'Mara, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4, Rojer/Tecau took down top-seeded defending champion Juan Sebastian Cabal/Robert Farah of Columbia in another come-from-behind effort. Rojer/Tecau then topped Rohan Bopanna/Denis Shapovalov, 7-5, 7-5, in one of Monday's quarterfinals.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
  • Robin Anderson (2012-15) captured the first two WTA main-draw wins of her career at the Prague (Czech Republic) Open. The two-time Honda Sports Award winner for tennis defeated Dejana Radanovic of Serbia, 7-6(4), 6-4, and Martine Di Giuseppe of Italy, 6-4, 6-3, before falling to Valentini Grammatikopoulou of Greece in three sets.
  • Jennifer Brady (2014, 2015) defeated No. 17 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany Sunday, 6-1, 6-4, becoming the first former college player to reach the US Open women's singles quarterfinal round since 1994. Brady has yet to drop a set entering play Tuesday, earning wins over Anna Blinkova of Russia (6-3, 6-2), American CiCi Bellis (6-1, 6-2), Caroline Garcia of France, 6-3, 6-3, and Kerber. The quarterfinal-round berth surpassed Brady's previous fourth-round trips at the 2017 Australian and US Opens and matched US Open showings made by UCLA greats Patricia Hy-Boulais (1992) and Barbara Gerken (1981). Brady and partner Caroline Dolehide suffered a three-set loss to Oksana Kalashnikova/Alla Kudryavtseva in the first round of doubles play.
  • The sixth-seeded Japanese tandem of Ena Shibahara (2017, 2018) and Shuko Aoyama held off the American duo of Ann Li/Bernarda Pera, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round of US Open doubles action, but was subsequently dropped by Hayley Carter/Luisa Stefani in three sets. Shibahara/Aoyama reached the third round at the Australian Open earlier this year.
