Bruins Win at Washington, 24-17

October 16, 2021 | Football

SEATTLE, Wash. – Dorian Thompson-Robinson found the endzone three times, twice through the air and once on the ground, for 270 total scrimmage yards in UCLA's 24-17 road victory over Washington at Husky Stadium on Saturday night.

Thompson-Robinson saved his best drive for the fourth quarter, capping a 13-play, and five-minute, 47-second possession with a strike to tight end Greg Dulcich to give the Bruins (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) the lead over the Huskies (2-4, 2-2 Pac-12). It was Thompson-Robinson's second passing touchdown of the game, and marked the seventh game of his career with at least two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

The redshirt senior quarterback did it at an efficient rate, too, completing 21 of his 26 passes for 183 yards and a 165.3 quarterback rating.

Dulcich's score was set up by two 16-yard and 14-yard rushes by running back Zach Charbonnet. Charbonnet eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fifth time this season, gaining a team-high 131 rushing yards tonight. A fourth-down conversion on a one-yard push by Thompson-Robinson and a shovel pass to Dulcich out of the backfield put the Bruins at the Washington 12.

The Huskies crossed midfield on their next possession and hurled a deep ball down field that freshman defensive back Devin Kirkwood bobbled and snatched away from the Washington receiver for the Bruins' second interception of the day and the first of his career.
A Thompson-Robinson zone read for eight yards converted a third down with two minutes remaining and sealed the Bruin victory. Thompson-Robinson rushed for 87 total yards on 12 rushing attempts. UCLA dominated the fourth quarter with 118 total yards compared to Washington's 23.

Senior defensive back Quentin Lake picked off Washington quarterback Dylan Morris at the Husky 30-yard line in Washington's first possession of the game. The first score came in the first quarter from a field goal off the foot of Washington's Peyton Henry.

UCLA answered at the end of the quarter on a drive that started and ended with 17-plus-yard completions by Thompson-Robinson. Thompson-Robinson located senior wide receiver Chase Cota for 19 yards – their first of three connections for 60 yards in the half. Charbonnet toted the rock for three consecutive rushes, the last going for 23 yards. On the next play, Thompson-Robinson hit redshirt sophomore Kam Brown on a 17-yard screen pass for a touchdown to take the lead, 7-3.
Two big gains on the ground – a 22-yard rush by redshirt senior running back Brittain Brown and 13-yard rush by Charbonnet – pushed UCLA into scoring position on its next possession. Redshirt sophomore kicker Nicholas Barr-Mira drilled his ninth field goal of the season from 39 yards out to extend the Bruins' lead to a touchdown, 10-3, in the second quarter.

The Bruins' score went unanswered as the Huskies were forced to punt on a three-and-out. Thompson-Robinson picked up two big chunks of yards with a 22-yard scramble on the opening play of the drive followed by a 27-yard completion to Cota that would put UCLA at the Washington 10. On 4th and one at the goal line, Thompson-Robinson, with a push from Brown, squeezed through the Husky defensive line for paydirt, 17-3.

The Huskies evened the score, 17-17, with two touchdowns coming before the end of the first half and their first possession of the second half.

The Bruins return home to the Rose Bowl next Saturday to face Pac-12 North foe No. 9 Oregon (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) at 12 p.m. PT.
